View Full Version : Sr20det Head Rebuilt Video ?

Hey everyone,
Does anyone know If their is a Sr20det head rebuilt DVD out there.
I have been searching, the only DVD I can find is the one by Drifting.com.
Drifting.com doesn't even cover the sr20head in any detail, they say you have to buy both the sr20det engine built DVD and the RB25 head rebuilt dvd and get an idea. This is the only DVD i have found. I know nico has the DIY but i was wondering if their is a video out there ?

I guess I just want real time reference while I am doing this. This is my first cylinder head rebuild. I am planning to buy a head get a 3 angle valve job amd shimming from a machine shop. and put in BC cams, springs, retainer and valve stem seals...thats about it. I don't want to fuck it up.

take class at skool, that will be your best help you can get. Teachers have worked tons of engines, SR head is not 1 and only head out there that needs special training many other manufactures use similar and same designs.

The #1 thing you need to do this an not do damage to your head and/or take 100 years to put the keepers back on is the
SNAP-ON brand valve spring compressor.
It bolts to the head using the cam cap bolts and allows you to use one hand to compress spring while you put keepers on with the other hand.
Even with this tool, it still helps to have 2 people.....sometimes the keepers don't wanna go on right and can get "jammed" in the retainer the wrong way = sucks

Better yet, if you take a class you will have a table and a bench where you bolt down your head and you can do the same thing only without having to worry about dropping keepers down into your block, cuz they will bounce every now and then. And you will go out and pay, I forget what that tool costs now it's like $300 for a tool you will use once? maybe twice if you don't do the job right. Classes will have better tools then this, I know the tool you are talking about and it's great for working on the car, but there are better tools out there when working on a bench.

I did it with the head on a work bench, and it is still a pain in the ass, especially when your hands are oily and aftermarket valve springs are stiff as balls.

you can rent that tool and its REALLY simple to build one yourself. Honestly OP the head is actually really simple. How to Build a 9000-rpm SR20DET Head (http://www.nicoclub.com/archives/how-to-build-a-9000-rpm-sr20det-head.html)
Pretty much more all you need. FSM too.

The 9000-rpm head article has and is going to be my reference, I just wanted to know if their was any vids out there. It seems simple from what I see...the keepers seem to be a pain though.
I won't be doing this all by myself I will have help.

put the keepers in the retainers that way, you start with oiling/lubing everything up then stack everything up washer, spring, retainer with keepers. Wash your hands, now you have a whole row off retainers with keeper in them, press down and they fall into place most of the time, if they don't keep a pick close by. Don't do the method of compressing then inserting the keepers
