So I have a 93 hatchback with 200500 miles on it and its running like shit. I just got it smogged and it failed horribly. Its been burning oil since forever (worn o-rings), and there is always something wrong with it. Currently there is something up with the power steering (its making a noise when I turn the wheel, I assume a belt is loose, but I really have no idea), the engine has a rattle, and apparently the fuel injection system needs to be replaced. Plus, the AC doesnt work (well, the AC might, but the panel that controls the AC and where the fan blows doesnt, although you can change the temperature (aka, turn on the heat) and change the speed of the fan) and neither does the windshield wiper fluid sprayers.

Basically Im torn and I need your advice. Should I:
1) rebuild the engine
- how much does this cost? I assume I would do a full rebuild
2) throw in a new engine (Id probably stick with the KA to keep it legal, unless there are better street legal options; basically no SR)
- how much is this? I know it depends on the engine, but are KAs still $1500?
3) sell it
4) sell it to the state (theyre offering $1,000) although Im pretty sure they destroy the car (not something I really want to see happen)

I would need a shop to do all the work on the car for me, as I lack the skill to rebuild/replace the engine and as a law student lack the time to do it even if I knew how.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Rebuilding a KA with OEM parts is about $600.

KA's go for $400-$600 on average. Would be better having yours rebuilt.

If you need a shop to do the work for you, I would just sell it. You're looking at an easy $2,000+ in work alone.

Sometimes, it's just easier to move on.

Next time, have the car serviced regularly. S13's aren't hard to maintain.

take that money and drop a swap.
but i see you live in cali. maybe keep it as a track car and get another daily(not sure what your situation is) and go from there.

if worse comes sell it and buy another 240 that is goin for cheap they are out there.

I got it a little fucked up with the intention of fixing it, but shit happens and I havent been able to. The electrical shit all happened at once and I havent had the money to get it fixed, but now that I have come into some money I need to decide to either sell or fix.

And really, I guess my options are dropping $2500 in my headache or spending $2500 on someone else's headache.

Ive decided not to sell. My S13 will no longer be my daily (once I find something else to drive) but Im definitely going to keep it. Since its not worth much and I really do like the car its just going to sit around waiting for me to tinker with it.

Im pretty stoked.

sell it sell it

You offering to buy it?

Like I said, Im not going to daily it. Im actually not sure what Im going to do with it other than try to take it apart and put it back together again. This going to be my first attempt at fixing shit on the car (beyond replacing spark plugs and super basic stuff like that) so Im kinda excited.

Im sure I'll get a fix it ticket if Im seen driving around with an SR and I wont be able to smog it, but whatever, I dont need it as a daily but I like it too much to get rid of it.

Start over fresh man. Check craigslist ads for a better conditioned 240sx. You'll save so much more time and less headaches. $2500 can get you a really decent 240sx too.

Sometimes its best to move on. Unless you got a rad amount of cash, then by all means go ahead and fix it.

Well, most of the problems are in the engine, so if I replace the engine most of the problems will be fixed. The AC isnt working, but I think the reason for that is the control board thing in the dashboard isnt working properly, which is fine because I want to use the digital climate control anyway. After that it just needs to be painted, and reupholstered and new front seats.

I dunno, Im pretty bipolar about the car. When Im driving it I hate it (due to the mechanical problems its having), but when Im not I really really like it. We have a weird abusive relationship or something.
