I am looking at this product and wondering if anyone has try it.

http://server.dcsteam.com/~north/store/images/P/p-63.jpg

It is a sprayed dye. I am mostly concern about the coverage and durability. My carpet is dary grey and I want to dye them red, Any suggestion other than this product? How will those dye stand up with everyday driving?

Any input would be very appreciated.

I've never tried that product, but i did use something similar on my headliner. It just felt too crusty though after the paint dried...
Just go to your local arts and craft shop and pick up those fabric powder dyes. Thats what I did with mine. Bought 2 boxes, filled up a clean trashcan with water and threw that stuff in, with a little bit of detergent, then threw my carpet in. It kinda fades over time if you get direct sunlight on it, but you can always re-dye it or just use the shit load of boxes and it'll probably last longer.
Don't remember the name of the product though. Sorry

EDIT: I think the product is called "RIT"

i used the duplicolor fabric paint they sell at most parts stores. honestly paint is paint on this kinda thing. best advice i can give is brush it while you paint it. keeps it from clumping which makes it look/feel like ass.

Should I choose to dye my light grey 91+ carpet to black, would I need to clean it first? It's got some really gnarly stains on it.

of course you need to clean it. paint wont stick to the oiled up and dirty stains on your carpet. take it to a carwash and pressure wash the shit out of it :D

I've dyed the carpet in 3 vehicles...a '68 Nova with RIT, and a clean scrub brush. Just poured it on and scrubbed it in....worked awesome. '93 Ford Probe with RIT, poured it on, scrubbed it in...took about 4 treatments and still had a blue hue to it (original color was blue, dyed to black). I'm thinking maybe the newer synthetic carpets don't take the dye as well. '95 Ford Explorer with Dupli-Color spray, did get crusty but covered very well...after being in there a few months, it softened up a bit and I was very happy with it.

Does anyone know how the RIT will do when dying a lighter color onto a darker color carpet?

I am looking to bleach the shit out of the carpet before dying, will that work?

^^The box says to use RIT color remover to lighten the original fabric color as much as possible before dyeing to a lighter color.

anyone think if i mixed it in a spray bottle then sprayed the carpet would be a good idea. i cant really make too much of a mess where im at and no garbage cans big enough to fit it

Just fold it up so you can fit it into a garbage can and just stir it upppp. That's what I did
Or.... Maybe you can use your bath tub? :mepoke:
Anyways, here's some pics I took of the outcome
I think I used 2 or 3 boxes of Rit in black, folded up my carpet to fit into a garbage can, poured a few gallons of hot water mixed with the Rit stuff, and stirred her up for a few minutes. Of course BEFORE all this I did a little cleaning since there were some nasty stains on it before (It was originally Light Grey in color, some of the stains wouldn't come off)

Actually looks way better in person. Pictures don't do it justice.
It sure did hide all those nasty stains though :)
Took pretty long for it to start fading. You probably could use more boxes of it or maybe try not to get too much sunlight on it to prolong it. I didn't have ANY tint whatsoever, but lasted pretty long imo.

I'm really going to consider this now. I already have black interior but the carpet sort of faded and under the SC sun I'm already planning on getting tint. Whered you guys pick up your RIT stuff, in store? If not I'm sure I can find it on google. Anyways the previous owner just got the leather seats COMPLETELY redone and thats what I get compliments on most so I want the rest of the interior to match as well. Hopefully this will do the trick.

ok so i had gray carpet and i used 2 boxes of rit mixed with a lil detergent and softener. mixed it all up with hot water and let it sit for about 2 hours. scrubbed it, vaccumed it dry then let it hang. it didnt get that much darker.

i also did the rear bottom half seat. (s13). i used a spray bottle for this on the ground and let it settle. it worked just the same and came out a blueish hugh. used an entire box just on this too.

That example above came out really clean looking and dark, I wonder why yours didn't come out as expected. I would like to dye my carpet too and possibly the headliner.

I don't know about headliners, since you can't really get them wet or else it gets all soggy. The way I did my headliner was I sprayed that Vinyl/Fabric paint stuff on it. Looked hella good, but the surface felt all crusty from the dried paint.

I didn't vacuum mines dry. Just put it in the garbage can, stirred her up a few minutes, let it sit, and stirred it up a again a few more times, then right out of the garbage can, I let it dry till the next morning.
Not too sure if I rinsed it out the next day, I THINK I did?

I would not even bother with 10 year old plus carpet, I know stock interiors will sell you a better quality carpet in damn near any color you want for about 150 and its molded for the car you want. Fits like stock and they will even send you free color and thickness samples in the mail.

So I tried so many methods and nothing work with the RIT dye on this carpet. My guess is my 1990 carpet is inpenitrable unless its 20 year old blood sweat and tears mixxed with mac and cheese and baby puke.

None-the-less I got a little impatient and let mother nature take control over it. And it worked just enough to cover up the stains and add a little tint considering the fact i mixed 7 different colors at once to cover the spectrum.

Commercial carpeting sucks to modify

Ok so I read over these posts...and i experimented...first off, I got a huge trash can and emptied a 64 oz bottle of degreaser and some water...i kept it concentrated because my carpet was pretty dirty...then i took one of those huge brooms and dipped it into the bin then onto the carpet and started scrubbing...i repeated that thoroughly until i covered the whole carpet about twice...then i just took the entire carpet folded it and threw it in the bin overnight...then next morning, i took it out and used a pressure washer to get everything off...it worked beautifully, the liduid was super brown and the carpet was not as oily...anyway, i let it dry in the sun and then vacuumed everything...the result was pretty good for a 20 year old carpet.

Now the fun part: the carpet was a light gray...my whole theme is a black/black midnight murdered out theme haha...so i figured i needed a black carpet. i had a stockinteriors.com one from before but i sold it (shouldnt have, that thing was nice)...anyway, so i wanted to try to bleach the carpet to see if i could lighten it up then dye it black (hoping it would absorb better)...i took a small piece of carpet and tried, the bleach did absolutely nothing...this carpet is tough as shit...so i looked around and decided I had nothing to lose. I had a can of "America's Finest All Purpose Fast Drying Interior/Exterior Enamel" black spray...(the purpose was to cover the carpet in a full black color, then hit it with the dye so it picks up any of the spots I missed)...the result was amazing (considering each can was $0.97 and I bought 10 but that was way too much, so I kept the spares haha)...ooo, big thing, while you spray a small section at a time, be sure to brush it so it doesn't clump and it spreads the paint more evenly...anyway, I will post pictures as soon as it dries...gonna work on the headliner as well...thanks for all your help guys

RIT dye is the way to go

yeah dude, when i was into paint balling i made a full guille suit with rice bags, its burlap, and RIT die worked wonders. Pretty much ur going to "tie die" your carpets, right? so why not use dies that penetrate the fabric deep instead of a paint that is going to clump like colored gel pretty much

+1 for RIT dye
