Does the hot pipe go into the intercooler from the top, or through the side?

through the side. This piping is for the HKS type-s S13 intercooler kit.

Are they Aluminum or Steel?

Steel. The elbow is cast steel, the other sections of tubing are coated with HKS's special heat paint. I have been told that it reflects heat to some extent... but that all could be rumor.
