have a 93 s13 with 168000 on the ticker and she fail the sniff test on smog. stock motor. just has lighted pulles drive shaft and vlsd
15 mph: CO2 = 13.96, O2 = 1.03, HC = 89 (MAX IS 88), CO = .18 (max is .52), NO = 1389 (max is 704)
25mph: CO2 = 13.75, O2 = .81, HC = 53(max is 63), CO = .08 (max is .50), NO = 1148 (max is 738)
i replaced the a airfilter, seafoemed the vac lines and oil, and did a oil changehttp://images.intellitxt.com/ast/adTypes/mag-glass_10x10.gif (http://zilvia.net/f/#). i'm also going to run some smog cleaner in the gas.
i just want some feed back to see if that should do the trick or should i replace the pvc or some else

check cap, rotor, wires, plugs and replace if needed
clean up maf and throttle body
set timing and idle properly
check for stored trouble codes
check o2 sensor with ecu in diagnostic mode 2, replace if needed
catalytic converter

High NOx numbers usually point to EGR problems. Check it out. Also check your timing.

advanced timing will automatically flag a fail. You need to set your timing to get stock spec.

^^
thats definitely true. the advance the timing the higher emission u would likely get.
my car passed with advance timing from the sniffer but the idiot tech failed me for high idle.
he didnt even check that my ac was on then he just failed.

Most likely your EGR valve. There was a way to put a screw in one of the hoses and hide it so it keeps the valve open/or closed I don't remember, the entire time and you can cheat and pass smog that way haha. Oh and of course the timing like previously said needs to be stock.
Or you can try and pull one from the junkyard and pray its good. Cuz they are like $100 brand new

Sorry to thread jack. I have the same problem and when my car is idling and i push up the EGR valve with my finger my car doesnt die and barely even stumbles. I took off and cleaned it out. cant figure it out could it be that one of my hoses has a hole??? BTW Stock KA24DE

I literally just failed for the same thing. I tested my egr system, and the diaphram was working as it should. So this pointed to the Catalytic Converter. Replaced it and passed. Of course a new Cat hides anything, but it got the job done.
Ca Smog = :bs:

Try opening up the EGR ports that run under the intake manifold and clean it out.Its not a fun job to do since you have to clean the pipe first horizontally and then vertically. If the engine doesn't stumble the passages may have carbon buildup, so check the ports first. And instead of pushing up the valve with your finger, remove the vacuum line that runs to the top of the EGR diaphragm and use a vacuum pump to put it under pressure and iver up the valve. If the car doesn't stumble and drop idle, check the passages.

Dont buy any high flow cats. Magnaflow is a high flow cat which lowers backpressure in the exhaust, causing the EGR valve to not open and function properly as it should. You need a good amount of backpressure for your emissions to work properly, and thats why a high flow cat, or 3 inch piping will increase emissions. I got mine as an oem replacement from napa auto parts, which was 192$. Im still running stock exhaust and i slapped it on, and everything running clean now.

Few months ago i was in the same situation, went form a gross poluter to a clean running car. First off, the EGR valves behind the valve cover were both bad and the vacum lines cracked. Second had a exhaust leak which also cause egr not to work right, third put your timing at 18, 4th stock cat and exhaust, no aftermarket free flowing bullshit. Change oil, clean maf, basic stuff, should pass.

i failed agian.but with seafoaming the vac lines and running some shit that said u would pass no matter what. the numbers got worse. i check the egr seemed ok but i'm just gona buy a new one. also i'm gona replace the pcv which is a b**ch. i'm gona pull the cat off to and check it too. if anyone has another trick or something i should check let me know. also i'll let u know how the test goes.

Did you check the two solenoids behind the valve cover? Its like a 3 way valve those things, at certain RPM they get electricity and rreroute your vacuum. Take them out, apply 12v, and blow through the nipple.
Edit: Dont get discouraged man, took me 4 tries, luckily i had a cool smog dude that didnt charge me.
