Hey guys. I was thinking about buying a 72 240z that has a ford 302 out of a 68 mustang swapped into it. Would this be a legal car to register in california since its presmog? Also, would i have to take it to any Refs or B.A.R. exams?

register it as a collector. cheaper to deal with and you dont have to smog it. well depends what state youre in and depends the smog laws.

You don't have to ssmog a 1972 240z, I believe any car before 1976 is exempt.

the vehicle is PRE-Smog regulation....its considered a classic vehicle...NO SMOG REQUIRED......that being said, i believe a cop can still give u a ref ticket

really? seems stupid to be able to get hit w/a ref ticket if it's exempt from smog laws...but hey it's california, so i wouldn't be surprised.

cops have the right to send you to the ref station if they suspect it doesnt pass smog

otherwise it will be smog exempt

There are no smog standards for a 72 Z.
How could not pass?

It's pre-1976, you could run it on the blood of a thousand dead sinners and it wouldn't matter. Fix that sucker up and enjoy!

Ah no a cop cannot give you a ref ticket on a smog exempt vehicle, period!

Oh and the cars were not pre smog. LOL There used to be smog regulations for them. Heh I remember having to smog my 240Z.

Its like this people there was a rolling 25 year law. Any car that was 25 years old was smog exempt because CARB figured there would so few of them on the road that it would not matter.
Then someone in Sacramento got the idea that stopping the rolling part of the 25 year part would bring in more revenue. so they stopped it at 1976. This happened in 2001.

Now certain legislators from the Farm regions i.e. Fresno who are being paid by farm lobbies not to put smog regs on their equipment got the idea to try and eliminate the exemption all together. Never mind that the Farms in the Central Valley pump out smog like its going out of style.

He was basically claiming that the 10% of 25 years or older cars on the road where putting out 65% of the pollution. LOL What about your beloved Farm lobbies asswipe.

Needless to say it did not get passed.

If your car is pre 1976 you have absolutely nothing to worry about period. In fact the cop will probably ogle it and compliment you on it. LOL
