Im sure cotton will do nothing for your exhaust. Cotton is not dense enough as well. I use scrap paper!!

Depends on what your trying to stop from making nosie. Inside like speaker compartments and stuff use dynamate but it adds weight i used it on everyting in side took up the carpet and all the panels and dynamated it so all you her on the inside is music and the dash rattle that i haven't found whats loose yet, if it's outside stuff like your muffler tighten screws and/or put rubber gromets or somthing

I have the same problems with rattles in the doors, the trunk rattles, the windows, and somwhere in my front end, oh yeah and the CAI pipe rattles in the engine bay. I found some cool stuff that helps, go to your local hardware store and ask them to point you to the foam section. They have this foam that is adhesive on one side and you can but it in variable thicknesses(1/4", 3/8" 1/2").
Then you take apart the sections(door panels, trunk area, etc. and place a few small sections of the foam at places where it looks like the plastic meets the metal. Experiment with different locations. I stopped the rattles in the trunk and the door close more solidly now with no annoying rattles, I can turn up the base without hearing the car rattle to death.
The foam comes in rolls of 10' for about 4-8 bucks a roll. Well worth it, I recommend it to anyone with the annoying rattle gremlins!!
Good Luck!!

Raammat (http://www.raamaudio.com/products.htm) is a less expensive alternative to dynamat though by no means is it cheap.
