I was driving down the freeway today, and I shifted into 5th gear. I pressed on the accelerator and the engine revved, and I went nowhere. I shifted back into 4th gear, and I started accelerating again. I tried 5th gear again, and it still acted like neutral. I didn't hear any crunching or grinding noises when I shifted into 5th, and it seemed to work just fine yesterday. Any ideas?

either your syncros are blown to hell, or your linkage slipped somewhere, not allowing you to shift fully into 5th, leaving you in neutral.

but at least your 5th gear didn't randomly explode and take out the others like my jetta did, that was a cheap fix:rolleyes:

I'm guessing that my linkage slipped somewhere, because I never heard grinding while shifting into 5th. I haven't taken a look at it yet because I have another car to drive, but when I do take a look at it, where should I start?

Internal.

A shift fork has come out of adjustment internally.

The tranny will need to be taken apart for further analysis. The forks run in grooves that move the assembly back and forth putting the right gears in the right position. If the 5th gear fork is no longer in the proper postion, it will not shift the cluster to engage 5th. Once it is torn down, it is not that hard to put it back..as long as the fork is not broken or fell off the shaft.

Seems like it slipped on the forkrod and that is why it is not longer pushing the cluster. It will need to be dropped down and opened up.

how about try to launch from 5th gear from a dead stop and see if it stalls or not. if it did then i guess there is some sort of slip, but if not then i think you have to take the tranny apart to see what is wrong with it.
