Car is so called "stolen"???? Help....

Ok guys its kind of a long story but i would appreciate your input and advice.


Ok so last night i was driving home at 12:30 am or so from walmart. I am driving normally and getting closer to my house. I am about half a mile away from home when a cop shoots out of no where and follows me.

I am driving normal and thinking to myself "okay i got nothing to worry about". Only have one street from my house he turns on his lights and pulls me over.

For a quick review he asks how im doing and asks if theres anything illegal in the car. I say no as there is none and give him my license and registration. He thens checks the VIN on my dash and asks me to step out.

At this point he removes my pocket knife along with everything else in my pockets and places them on roof. I am then escorted to the rear of his car while he looks at the info. He then comes back saying the VIN on dash doesnt match the registration VIN. 6 Back up cop cars then arrive.

They pop my hood and all start smiling and flashing their lights around the engine bay as i watch from the cop car. (I have a Redtop SR with front mount intercooler and t25 turbo. Also my engine bay is hella clean and shiny). They all come to me and then say that the VIN on my firewall matches and so does the one on the federal sticker but not the dash. Next is where i become pissed.

They tell me that my fricken car has been reported as stolen!!!!!! I was just pulled over about 2 weeks ago for exhaust and they never told me this. The weird thing is the car has been in my name and i do contain the registration and pink slip with my name on both since i got the car. Supposibly it was stolen out of Florida???? To make this shorter they towed my car and drove me home.

When i got home i showed them my pink slip and all info and they took it and said its gonna be used as evidence. When i came inside i had looked on a site for Florida that gives you a full report on VIN's and it said that my VIN is non existent in Florida. This is making me believe that the cops were maybe lying???? I also have been pulled over alot lately (not proud of it) and they never mentioned it. Also how would i have been able to register the car under my name if it was so called stolen.

It was a shock to me and now i dont know what to do guys. I have reciepts for every little thing on the car that i had purchased myself. Do you think they lied about the stolen part and took it to inspect parts and such? Is there any suggestions that you guys may have.

I will also thank someone very much if they can find out info if i send them my VIN. I dont have money to pay for a full carfax at the moment =[. I am also very depressed as i have thousands of dollars in my car from motor to suspension to wheels to interior. Car is pretty clean on the outside it does not look like a ricer or track car.

I had my friends uncle look up my vin and it appears that the car was actually stolen 2 years ago and just came up. i heard so from him my heart has dropped. all that im worried about now is will i be able to get all the items i had purchased and installed. i will not try to fight to keep the chassis as it is the right full owners and if he wishes to have it back so be it then. however i would like to have all my items back. it will make no sense to me if they try to give him all my things on the car. i already finished up getting all the receipts together.

Car was sold in Sacramento then sold to a city a little bit south of Sacramento, then sold 3 times in San diego, Made its way to cypress for another 3 transfers, then sold twice in west minister (once being to the kid who sold it to me) and then it shows the car in my city.

If the car was stolen from florida wouldnt it be shown on there?


My best guess now is that someone maybe saw all the pictures i have of my car posted and did research from seeing my plates and all and i guess reported it stolen.

Or the kid before me called in and said it was stolen from him and randomly said out of florida perhaps? I remember when i got it from him he called me a few days later saying he wanted it back and all but i told him no cause i purchased it and all then he got mad and said he was gonna contact a lawyer and all and i will hear from him again. Which i never did but that was two years ago......the same amount of time the car has been said to be stolen.......


Also there are two titles to my vehichle at the moment. I think the previous owner has the other one and used it to say the car was stolen from him.




If this is all him it is sort of good news i guess cause he is lying about everything and karma is a huge b**** and imma do whatever i can to get him back.

sadly it has to be the dash.. how come you didnt think about that when you put it in? ive read soo many threads about people who got in trouble because of when they swapped the dashboard they didnt swap the vin tag.. The dash that is in the vehicle is the dash it came with when i purchased the vehicle. I was younger and didnt know much bout matching vin's so i didnt check.

However last night when i asked them for the vin on the dash they would not let me have it and said they cant give it to me and that its in the case file if anything.

Like i said the vin's on the firewall and door match my registration and they said those are the ones that say the car is stolen, what i dont really understand is if the car was clamed stolen how would i have been able to register it under my name?

Also say if worse comes to worse and the vehicle was stolen and it just now caught up......will i be able to get the parts that i purchased off of the vehichle since i do have the proof that i bought them all? I am a college student and dropping as much money as i did in this car and thinking about not getting it back is really emotional no lie.

Changing VIN Plates on dashes is also illegal plus there a pain in the ass to do right. You have to go to the DPS in your city and request to have your VIN moved to a different location on your vehicle.

anytime you get a dash from the junkyard they should remove the vin and you get a replacement vin from BAR placed on your B pillar. Or atleast thats how mine went.

just drill the small black rivet with a smaler size drill bit.

move the vin number

and drop in a black rivet it there easy.
cops did that to me too my dash was from the junkyard they got happy when they saw it didint match with the car so they went to back to their car and checked and said i need to go get that changed

i had scanned a copy of each and gave it to them, i should have been more clear. but yes i will never give it to anyone but they asked for them for proof that the vehicle is under my name.

OP- Contact a lawyer NOW. A lot of bad shit happens in those holding yards. Crooked towdrivers, and people that run the facility, just bad all around, they could rob you blind and you would have no recourse because you can't prove what was on the car at the time it was towed. Get a lawyer and get your shit back. If it has been 2 YEARS since it was reported stolen there is something amiss.


Again....seek legal counsel! And make sure it is someone that has dealt with this before.

thanks man. i really dont know, i was able to register it and all with no problem at the dmv. even my dad was amazed on how they said it was stolen and i still was able to get all the paperwork done.

as far as placing object on car i hate it to, he basically tossed my shit on my roof and my knife does have a metal clip and could possibly have scratched it =/.

thing is i really want to but im a college student and dont have fund to hire one sadly. thats why it took me sooo long to build my car is cause i did it dollar by dollar and only had enough extra to pay for gas, food, and school.

however i do contain an album full of picuters of everything ive bought and when i was installing it as like a little portfolio. im taking in all the pics when i go in to show the receipts.

You can give your title to whomever so long as you immediately order a new one online. This will invalidate the serial number on the previous title as soon as the "lost title" order is placed online.

the actual vin on my firewall and federal sticker came back as stolen. i believe there was something about the vin on the dash as well but i told them they get swapped out by kids who dont want cracked dashes and they seemed to believe me.

i am thankful as to were i didnt get arrested because they told me i seem like a cool kid and i didnt know it was stolen cause how mad and suprised i got when i had told them. i also said if they take me to my house i will show every receipt and all paperwork ive been collecting on the car since i got it.

i doubt they are crooked cops because my friends uncle who is a cop looked up my vin for me and he also said it came up as stolen.

as far as being able to register it, from every thing ive found out over the few days.......when a car is stolen from a state its in that states database. dmv's from other states dont get the notice because they simply dont talk to each other and it it takes time for it to go through.


as far as the camcorder and picture thing i called yesterday to see if i could go in and they said i need a release from the investigator who wont be back on duty until monday (tomorrow) so i will be going and doing that if he allows me too.

they will both be done. Its still weird to me how we looked up the vin on the floridas dmv site or similiar site (i forgot the name) and it said the vin isnt in the state or that any records cant be found.

as far as the kid i have his full name from the smog paperwork he gave me when i got the car and i gave his name to the police cause they had asked for it.

lawyer will most likely be contacted but im awaiting to see how tomorrow goes when i talk to the detective. and nightmare yes....ive walked into my garage several times and all thats left are stains on the floor from grease and oil and all my tools still somewhat out of place and dirty from putting in my new stage 2 clutch. very very very very depressing.
