This is a brief overview of my build that's been ongoing for about the last 2 years give or take. I stopped counting the amount of cash that's gone into this thing, but I still feel it's all worth it!

We'll start at the beginning. The car was first picked up from Vancouver and driven the 3 hours home. This is my 2nd Z, my first being an 86n/a that was sold in summer of '06.

After a few modifications here and there. At the time was running about 8.5psi on the stock (itty bitty) t25 turbo.

Started to pull apart the shitty red interior piece by piece replacing it with what I could find locally

The turbo finally gave up the ghost on a trip to edmonton (leaving me with a $700 tow bill, nice)

I got the car home and pulled the engine apart, luckily there was no damage to the lower end at all. I had the heads ported and had a 5angle valve job done. Put on a bunch of other misc goodies and packed it away for the winter again (back to school)

After winter was over I finally brought the car to Calgary after I found a place with a garage for it, and did a few suspension mods to start with (polyurethane bushings everywhere)

A little paint to make it look nice and clean.

I then proceeded to drop the rear subframe to replace the bushings back there, turns out that the control arm bolts like to rust into one solid lump, so that took some doing to get out and proper

Decided that my stock, busted ass suspension needed some work dearly, so I went ahead and got some custom stuff done up to work with s13 GR+ Stance coilovers. The amount of z31's with a proper ride height is Severely lacking, stance = moar low.

New wheels were planned for before the layoff, now she sits on stock shoes looking silly.

I've given the car a very very base tune, taken it about the block a few times, it runs, drives on its own power which it hasn't for 3 years, and sounds mean as hell. The plans now are to take it back to Kelowna where it'll sit for another 3 long years whilst I get my degree in Mechanical engineering.

Oh, and the entire interior is all black now, including carpet

Centerforce dual friction clutch
Stock R200 LSD (clutch type) rebuild with 6 clutches (2 stock)
custom solid rear differential mount

Stock FS5R30A transmission (same guts as z32tt transmissions)

Interior:

Autometer gauges all around (boost, oil temp, water temp, oil pressure)

i miss my Z. when the motor and tranny blew i had to get rid of it due to the fact it was my daily and i couldnt take on another project car. had a few mods and put on some wheels never had a chance to drop it. heres a pic. gl with build.

Thanks for the kind words guys, I'm away from the car right now but am planning to make some adjustable front control arms as my next suspension project to go with the adjustable tension rods that are in the mix right now.

I'd love to be able to just up and buy parts, but there simply isn't a legitimate aftermarket out there for those kinds of modifications.

Once I've moved to Vancouver I'm hoping to find a place to store the car that's near me, would be great to have it ready for summer.

Yes, but they require 87-89 hubs and a 0.170" spacer to center the caliper over the rotor.

badass!!! mine is a 88!!! i just put z32 wheels and i had to put a 20mm space up front so the tire dosent rub the strut .. the fronts are 2255016 and the rears are 2455016

lol thanks, got some new rear lower quarters in the mail to replace mine that are totally rusted out. gotta love leaky taillights/rear 1/4 windows. was a long weekend and I really should have brought the z out, but things didn't work out.

Yes very good job, guess that engineer school came in handly ha!!! fortunally everyone is not able to do this type of project, like myself did the brushing on front end job on my 87 zx n/t . have to contract some works out. also put the 3" pipe from the caytalat to the rear. bought it from thezstore. sound great. looking forwarding in see you finished this babe up. oh by the way would had stay with the orginal interior but its all good , its ur babe. so hope all is good for you, am in the tacoma area . peace.

Nice build so far. My dad back in the early 90's owned a 85 candy apple n/a 5speed 2 seater z. Memory that i never forget, was when, a porsche not sure if it was a 911 at the time, pulled up next to us at a red light and revved lol. Dad revved back. We kept up to the top of 2nd gear then we got smoked lol. Awesome subscribed.

Yeah butter/crab spirits is pretty well known in the z31 community. There's a low revolution currently happening now that coilovers are much more available. It's exciting to see some well stanced z31's, they were pretty terrible not 6 months ago. Having this thing in storage is killing me, it was one of the first to roll the serialnine style adapters, now it's completely missing the boat.

Decided that replacing the silicon heater hose was a wise investment, especially considering the hose had started to 'sweat' oil out of it. Nasty. This new stuff is rated for 300.f and more pressure than I could ever hope to throw at it, good and abrasion resistant too.

for the 15 minutes of drive time i have on them they feel great. Much nicer than anything else i've driven that's lowered, be it springs or coils.

Colt cams stg 2 turbo grinds, was part of that big group buy from colt on 88hybrid 2 years back or so.

I'll keep an eye on this. I registered on z31performance myself after scooping up a vg30et an s12 and s13 gearbox. Love these cars and the simple yet awesome motors.

Care to elaborate on the cams a bit more? Where abouts to they shift the powerband?

got a bit more work done tonight, tacked up/tested out the welder on the beginnings of exhaust. i also ground off the old welds from the tension rods to make way for new, better ones lol.

the 'over the subframe' pipe, all welded up tonight, save the one vband side. Waiting to take the rest out from under the car to bolt the vbands together for welding to prevent warpage!

over the rear subframe, under the axle, out the back in the stock location. I've got the 'middle' piece tacked up now, going to weld whenever I get back into the groove, wasn't going as well as I'd like last night! GRR! lol.

Agreed. I want to pick up another set before summer so I can use the grams on the track. I am really pissed that I passed up a set of Miesters with white faces this fall. Those Weds sold faster than I could PM they guy. Hot ticket I guess.

Im slowly building up the IC kit I am putting together. Unfortunately my welding is sub par so I trust the work of others and can appreciate.

So is this thing going to be on the road and tuned in 2011?

Got the rear section all welded up, sans tip and vband (waiting to finish hangers before welding on tip, then remove everything to bolt vbands together for welding.)

As much as I would like to see a muffler on this thing, I think you could pull off an angled blast pipe out the back cut flush with the farthest point of the rear bumper.

Yeah, hopefully! I'm thinking the only time it will hit something is going over a speedbump, or up/down/over steep or uneven ground, which will all be at xlow speeds. I drag frame sometimes with my daily on some of the speedbumps/roads around here so this thing will be a real treat.

There's enough give in the poly hangers and flex pipe to allow for a good amount of overall movement.

Suffering setbacks lately, losing coolant into the engine somewhere. Checked compression and it's a solid 160 all across the board, at the rate it's losing coolant, there'd have to be a serious leak in the gasket causing major loss of compression so HG can probably be ruled out.

Best bet right now is lower intake manifold gasket leaking between intake tract and coolant reservoir. Replacing gaskets tomorrow, should hopefully solve issues. Gives me the opportunity to flush out the cooling system that's been sitting for a while anyways, as well as replace some leaky hoses.

Went to drive the car today, couldn't get it out of the garage (steep STEEP ass little driveway thing to get into garage.) The bash ramp sat about 1" off the ground, so I'm in the process of re-doing the mid pipe to gain more clearance. Would love to get it done tomorrow so i can drive teh fucking thing.

Feels a little wiggly and pulls all over the place driving, probably needs an alignment badly, but might be able to limp it to the new place.

Pulled it back into the garage, but after busting out a bit of Mr. Plow (http://blog.limewire.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/Mr_Plow.gif) action in the alley, it's kind of hard to look for leaks lol.

Still looks so good man. I finally found a z31. Its an 88 na but its in great shape digital dash and everything else works. It runs a little rough which concerned me at first until I realized something. I have an rb20 that needs a home. You will see my build thread pop up soon. Hopefully I can be on your level.

I'm running a very very conservative pull, barely any. Any pulling of fenders will give you more than enough room for 11j's, especially if you're sticking with 245/40's.

Less than stock right now :ddog:

Haven't gotten the car tuned yet, expect to be making 400+rwhp once the boost gets turned up to 22-24psi though.

Those should look great. My guess you will need at least a 15mm spacer to clear the rear CA.

I just recently put 255/35 Nitto 555 on 18x11. Good stretch and seated really easy, no need for a cheetah.

Has any supplier picked up the ball and started manufacturing the rubber that goes between the mirrors and the body?

I sold my way out of Z31s because I was having trouble finding parts that are necessary to ensure your car doesn't leak water or air.

For anyone wondering about fitment, I'll probably have to run a 5mm spacer to get it to clear the control arms and inner fender. It's really close right now, If I notched the trailing arm and shaved a bit of the inner fender it would fit fine

I was using a Miller Dynasty 200dx to build the exhaust. It belonged to a buddy of mine that I was living with, so I don't have it anymore. Hoping to buy the whole setup off him over the winter tho, that thing is a great welder.

Car's been sitting around for a while while I sorted out my daily driver. Got that all worked out, just in time to find another '88 for sale out in Duchess for a grand that had a bad clutch. So I went out and picked it up and trailered it home with help from a buddy.

Quickly started pulling it apart to repair/replace some things.

Car seems to be in decent shape aside from the standard rust issues. Pretty unavoidable with older nissan's, so I'm pretty used to it by now.

Anyway, I thought it was a great score, the car features lots of things that z31 guys get wet over, including:

Much desired factory R200 CLSD complete with finned diff cover
fs5r30a transmission, has been known to hold over 600whp at the dragstrip reliably.
full black interior, usually the red cars have the horrid red interior (http://imageshack.us/a/img201/8247/dsc00697ug2.jpg), but this one doesn't
Turbo front spindles and hubs, great for z32 brake conversions and everything related.

Plans for the near future for this one:

Timing belt job and fix all the little things, and the big things that are necessary to get it road worthy.
Replace completely rusted out front fenders.
Make it a fun, reliable daily that has all the creature comforts for winter including headlight washers, toasty heater and heated mirrors (in a car from the 80's, not bad!)
Minor suspension mods like polyurethane bushings to stiffen up the 25 year old bits.
Exhaust and intake, most likely just a 3" downpipe to e-cutout and mostly stock catback exhaust (sans cat)
Maxima e-fans and maxima 90amp alternator
Make use of the MBC that seems to have come with the car.
Find another TurboXS RFL bov to sit on the elbow I have that will fit on the car. Currently has an elbow with an unknown bung welded into it and capped off sketchily.
Install kick ass hks boost gauge in place of stock gauge location.
Short shifter, probably cheap ebay one. Other one has worked great in the other car
some kind of deck, has the OG stereo in there right now, crazy! too bad it's busted
Winter wheels/tires. most likely some cheap Sunny WOT-18's and Mustang saleen sc wheels in a 17x10 +20 with spacers.

That's pretty much where my current Z was before it went down and I was enjoying it quite a bit.

Future plans include:

hx40/35 hybrid in stock location, supporting mods.
toying with setting up an air to water intercooler, trying to keep things as simple as possible under the hood.
Get a/c working if it doesn't currently.
Stance coilovers (only company that makes coilovers to fit the car)
Nice summer wheels maybe. Perhaps pull the Varrstoens off the current Z when I find another pair of equips.

Been toying with the idea of a swap into the current z, and pulling that engine for this car. Will have to see how the rest of the winter plays out.

Bump for you. I have really been thinking about trading my S14 for a Z31 turbo... They're so cheap! But I'm not gonna be able to do all the fabbing you & most other Z31 guys do. I just wonder how far you can get with off the shelf stuff...

ASCO (Acadiana Sports Car Orphanage) Has really picked up a lot of the slack for aftermarket on the z31, and now Stance has come out with a coilover kit for the z31 as well.

I didn't know how to custom fabricate before I started working on this Z either, I just kinda learned as I went along.

Yeah, I would want to keep things as simple as possible if I went this route so I'm glad to see that development and support isn't quite as dead as ppl make it out to be. I'm looking at what ppl are doing with their stock T3's modified into T3/t04's and this platform is become more & more tempting.

Redrilling the rear subframe for adjustable camber and working with the available Stance or Powertrix coilovers are seeming like less of a big deal now. But I'm sure there's tons of other little things I'm not even seeing yet. I'll just keep eyeing different builds for a while to learn more stuff.
