View Full Version : KA won't start. Timing is right. Has fuel. Cam timing is right

I just put this motor together (received car with no head). This is a KA2de in an S13.
Ive tried:
1. Reset cam timing (TDC on Crank pulley and cam lobes pointing away from eachother).
2. Reset ignition timing (At TDC on compression stroke rotor points at 1st plug)
3 Checked ECU. Code 55
4. Checked fuel line coming from filter. Shoots gas so pump is priming.
Theory:
The car isn't getting gas. Either the FPR or the injectors...
All help is appreciated.
Thanks

Do you hear the fuel pump kick on?
Try spraying starter fluid while cranking...if it is fuel...it should start for a sec.

Do you have a friend with you?
You can pull a distributer wire and hold it close to the block while cranking to see if you are getting spark.
Shoot starter fluid one of the vacum hoses close to the intake manifold while your friend cranks.
Does it try and start?
If you have spark, and gas is pumping, but it wont stumble or try and idle, you may have another issue.
I think you can actually have the distributer 180 degrees off??
someone help me here, im going off of stuff i overheard at the shop at this point...........

Well, is there any way for a FPR to go bad and not flow anymore? I know there is gas coming up from the fuel filter but I feel like its not getting into the cylinders.
Ive already check the spark. Its bright (and startling)
Timing is correct. Ive check and rechecked. And reset it enough times.
1.Cams pointing away.
2.Crank pulley at TDC (compression stroke)
3.Rotor pointed to #1.
4.Wires in clockwise order 1-3-4-2

Spray starting fluid into it...if it starts, you got a fuel problem.

is there any updates on this issue? im having the same one and i know i dont get any fuel past the fpr because i unhooked it, tried to start it and see if it would spray fuel...it didnt...if the fpr doesnt allow fuel through, what should i check?

Check your thread,... if you checked that yet.
Pull fuel rail - make sure injectors are ACTUALLY spraying fuel.
Put plug on end of plug wire, hold against intake manifold while cranking the car. If you see a blue spark jumping to the manifold you've got spark.
If you have both of these, you have something really wrong(ignition timing out of phase or cam timing way way off).

yeah when i swapped in another single cam on my car the timing sprocket was 180 degrees off and it wouldnt start so that could be it.. not too sure tho.. i had fuel and spark and all that jazz and the timing sprocket was off..

If you removed the return line, you might not get fuel coming out of the FPR. Especially when there's no vacuum.
As for the distributor, the correct procedure for installing it is to line up the marks and insert it while at TDC compression.
You might try removing the injector rail and seeing if the injectors are spraying while cranking.

yea i checked on my other thread cotbu. thanks a lot youve helped. im getting a spark but i have yet to try my injectors. timing sprocket? i put my cams in the same spot they were in. i made marks on them before removing them. how can i tell if i put em in wrong?

Is the distributor 180 deg out? It's an easy mistake and a easy fix if so.

when you say 180 degrees out, do you mean the whole dizzy is 180 degrees literally? im not so knowledgable with timing yet but i will learn with this.

TIMING!!! IT WAS TIMING. thanks a lot guys. except right now its not running as smooth. im gonna set the timing with a timing light and see what happens. its smoking a lot and its not running too smooth.

Yep, I actually just pmd you to check your timing. Check all your vacuum lines next. I had a couple that were cracked under the intake manifold that made idling rough/high.
