Replace them. Or wedge a broom handle in there. You can't repair a bad cylinder, no matter what you've heard.

I agree. The hatch should stay up by itself, if it doesn't, you need new struts.

buy a new one.

Or bend the strut - makes it slower to go in. Or kept a vice grip in the trunk. When you open. clamp down the strut.

I do not own a s13, but I seen my dsm buddy do this. Thought it was funny but it works.

Dealer or salvage. There is no other option unless you run screws in like I've seen before.

how long do you want them to last. the car is already 20 yrs old. one of my original ones still works. hope this car isnt around in another 20 yrs. something depressing about that.

so much talk about all these mods to keep them open. struts are freakin cheap, if you can't afford them then there is seriously something depressing about that instead haha

quick thread jack...what makes the hatch pop up because sometimes when i pull the lever it doesnt open ihave to shove a water bottle by the lever then force lift the hatch open...is that part of the struts too?

It is, but the latch also needs adjustment. The latch is sitting too high so when the hatch is released, it's not kicking out of the latch. There should be tension on it when closed so when released the hatch springs up a little. Ton of threads about adjustment on here.

Don't fuck with ghetto rigging bad struts... the previous owner of my hatch did this, and one of the struts broke off.

The broken strut went right through the rear quarter window when it broke, busting out the window. Now instead of being a $30 job, it's a $150 job.

Why do you need your hatch to open more? Just curious.
