Hey guys, need some help. I'm looking to have my sr20 rebuilt and really haven't been able to find anything too specific on the process of pulling an sr from my chasis(s13). I've been looking through this site, and google searching it. Really nothing worthwhile for a first timer. I'm 17 with a dad who doesn't know shit about cars for the most part so I could use some help on this one. I'm looking to save about $800-900 bucks in labor so I can put that towards some coils or wheels potentially, and I really would like to get to know my car alot better. I know the basic steps of drain the fluids, detach all wiring, vaccum lines, and hoses, use a crain, and detach the engine from the motot mounts. I'm just worried about some of the finer details if there are any. Any tips or walkthroughs that you've seen out there? Any help would be appreciated

there really isn't that much to it. you pretty much have it.. drain fluids, unhook wiring, vac lines, intercooler pipes, motor mounts, trans mount, driveshaft, slave cylinder. i think thats about it. just use common sense and its not that hard.
by the way im 18 and just did all of that today and im pulling my motor tomorrow.

you pretty much got done already....unplug/drain everything
then lift it out with the cherry picker, if you wanna make it a little easier take the tranny off first

Dont forget to label all the connectors and vacuum lines specifically before you unhook them. It will make the job of putting it back together 20x easier. Also, you dont have to pull the transmission, but it is gonna be a pain getting all the bolt holes to line up on the way back in.

awesome, thanks guys. So you think pulling it with the tranny would be much easier then?

when i do mine i will be leaving the tranny on. some people take it off others don't. thats up to you. if you leave it on be sure to take the shifter out. it will make it much easier to get out with the trans on.

I always pull sr/ka's with the tranny attached
make sure to remove the shifter from the tranny first though
it is easy to bend
remove the radiator first too
get a buddy or 2 to help you maneuver it since its your first time

Sometimes it a super pain in the ass to get at the bellhousing bolts so alot of people pull the trans with the engine. Plus if your gonna pull the engine you might as well pull the trans and fix any leaks or what not. It wont be any harder to pull the trans at the same time.

disconnect shit that attaches to engine.
pull engine out
figure out what all that shit was that you disconnected
take that shit to get rebuilt
put that shit back in
reconnect that shit

This is the big thing I'm afraid of. I'm familar with everything in the engine bay because I did most of the wiring myself, I just really havent investigated too much inot the shifter/tranny area. Best way to get at that from inside the car?

yea to take it out pull the shift boots off and you will need a C clip remover (can be bought at sears) or u can use some needle nose pliers
after the clip is out pull shifter up and out then stuff a CLEAN rag into the hole
and PULLLLLLLLLLL motor out
i did pulled my ka24de out out of boredem cuz it has knock was my first time pulling and i just disconnected everything double checked all hoses and what not and it came up and out

I was 16 when I pulled my first motor and did not have half the knowledge I have now.
It is just intimidating the first time, not much to it though.
You have most everything down, now just grab a couple friends to help you guide it out without damaging anything
You should check out one of the local chicago 240 sites. There are always people willing to lend out a hand.
Hit me up if you need anything!

Just make sure that somebody guides the tranny out of the car. If you dont guide it out, it might catch the power steering hardlines.

i love how most of us s chassis guys didnt go to school for cars but we know how to do anything, and if we dont know how to do it we do it anyway and learn.

I thought it could run alot better so when I had Eric at TF check it out the compression numbers on the 4th cylinder arent too hot. So I'm going to get my top end rebuilt.

yea it is pretty noobie of me but for a first timer it's pretty intimidating. i either learn through this site(which has been god to me when it comes to fixing things) or just by playing around myself. there really arent any writeups or faq's on it so i'm just looking for a bit of advice so i don't royally eff up an expensive piece of my car.

What were the compression numbers and why you getting the top end rebuilt when compression has everything to do with the bottom end. Well unless you have a valve thats not sitting properly.

yea the 4th cylinder isn't too hot, the cylinder/piston ring is pretty much done so its leaking some oil and not holding its compression well.

so then you wanna rebuild the bottom end you mean?

nonono, the cylinder itself isn't bad, thats my fault on the wording  Replacing a piston ring would be considered top end would it not?

Nope.
Top End=Head
Bottom End=Block
Just take your time since its the first time you are pulling a motor you dont want to snag wires or power steering lines and cause yourself a bigger pain.
