courtesy light delay

I've been searching for a while now, i was wondering if anyone knows a way to create a courtesy light delay for an s13. meaning after you close your door, the dome light will stay on for 15 seconds and slowly dim untill it turns off instead of just turning off quickly. just like the dome lights in alot of newer cars. i've looked online and have seen a few kits but they're kinda pricey. i'm looking for more of a diy or something cheaper. Let me know if anyone has any ideas.

or better yet, how can i make my interior lights fade slowly instead of just cutting off. maybe a capacitor?

If your gonna need anything it'll be a rheostat, or better known as a dimmer. Not a capacitor.

because i chose to do a vip style for my s chassis. I need to run the puddle lights to the dome light. and i would like them to stay on for a few seconds to actually be functional.

s15's come with that feature.

when you unlock the doors the dome light and key light come on.

and when you shut off the car and get out it stays on for 10 or so seconds.

If i were you i would buy a small capacitor and give that a shot. The rheostat/dimmer is a manual switch that you would have to control, so it wont be automatic like you want. If you end up doing the capacitor let us know if it works cause I would also like to do this. Im sick of feeling around in the dark for my ignition keyhole.

Go to a DEI retailer and buy a 528T pulse timer relay. Wire it to the unlock pulse of your keyless/alarm for the trigger, then to the domelight for the output. Adjust it as required, every time you unlock the door the domelight trips on, good for both entry and exit illumination.

Easier than building a circuit.

i have this in my daily 09 corolla, convenient..never crossed my mind to have it in my s13 but thats a good idea! keep us updated on whatever you do!

Look around and see? When I sold DEI products a decade ago retail was like $29, but plenty of online places sell for less. You actually have to do that part yourself.

ive found the piece for $12 or so.

I wasn't implying using a switch from your house, or anything manual at all. lol

And to recommend a capacitor means you don't know how it actually works. The capacitor would work, if the OP wanted a strobe light in his car, lol.

strobe light lol, sweet. My friend has a 95 maxima with the same exact domelight as the s13. but it has the feature im looking for. Does anyone know if i pulled one from a junkyard if it would work, is the circuit even in the dome light itself or is it in the power wire?

The circuit is not in the domelight. Think about what you just said, you know the light is the exact same part, so how would it be different? Different is not the same. It's different.

Well what i'm asking is if there is an additional board or circuit clipped onto the domelight switch along with the whole fixture, i'm saying the same as in identical style and shape. All i'm asking is if the delay is coming from the actual unit or the power wire.

you would have to go through the entire maxima wiring harness and fuse pinout and find a way to splide it into your existing cicuit.

You already have a couple really good responses as to how you should go about this. I suggest you take one of those routes.

Stop looking for an easier way out and apply yourself. It may turn out even easier than you think and you will be more proud of the effort in the end.

Thanks for the advice, i've been trying to figure out the schematic. i have not the basic knowledge of electrical work, when involving circuits and relays and what not. So i'm trying to understand and teach myself at the same time, before i waste any time, money, or get hurt from doing this.

There used to be a guy selling them pre-made on ebay for about $25. I can't find them right now, so maybe he stopped.
