ok i'm building a 240 for drifting.
i have the stock diff still in it. so i was thinking about welding it but then i have seen people get lsd diffs from another car. i was wondering what other diff could i use or should i just weld it and say fuck it. i'm really puzzled on this one so please any comments are appreciated thank u.

This has been covered many times. True, search.
People sometimes swap a VLSD from the HICAS s13/14 or infiniti j30 into 240's sometimes.
For s13, s13 vlsd's bolt on.
On s13, s14 vlsd's need to swap the diff cover and use custom bolts and washers.
i don't know about the details of a j30 vlsd swap.
if you're going to be drifting, a vlsd won't last very long, because the couplings will wear more and more every time the gear oil heats up until it just stops locking as good. also, vlsd's don't lock up as instantly as clutch-type or torsens.
you can also swap an s15 helical, though, you'd have to search for what you have to do to swap it on.
and then there's aftermarket solutions, such as nismo, kaaz, and others.
if you weld the differential, it will just stay locked completely all the time.
do some research and see what option fits you best.

weld it, i've been on a welded diff for about 4 months now and i love it. i've drove it in snow, ice, rain, everything. it's fine.

Ok well thank u I'm sorry for bringing it up but I have dial up so I just figured I'd post it on here I think I will just weld it because it's not going to b street legal

I thought I was going to get a free post "IBTL", but damn...first time I had that as a reason, "I have dial up"...LoL Feel bad for you man!
It depends on what you want to do with the car. Drifting I would either get a LSD or weld it (I wouldn't advise for DD). but for track or auto-x, I would just get a VLSD, safer for DD too.

Well it's definetly gonna be a straight drift car and nothing else. The dial up thing sucks ass it takes like 20mins to load a freakin page

just weld it man.. Just as good as a 2way n cost way less. I bet if u take off ur diff urself u can get sum1 to weld it for like 50 bucks. I have a tomei 2way n I drifted in my friends welded n it kicked out pretty much the same.

Live with parents and no job = weld it
paying rent and low wage job = buy used 2 way
graduated college and getting paid = try diffent ones until you find the right one for you

If your gonna use the car for anything but drifting, welded = fail. The point of the differential is to let each wheel rotate at different speeds while the car is turning. DDing a welded diff means you will wear out tires fast not to mention tire chirp or drag when parking. I bought a car with a welded diff and it drove me nuts especially parallel parking. I got a J30 diff from the junk yard and I have been very content with it.

well yea i'm gonna use it to drift.. but its also my DD< so i think i would just be willing to give up a little comfort on my budget is all i'm saying

Can you afford a diff?
I mean with dialup and all...
I am SO tempted to post a high res picture in this thread...
In all seriousness though, a welded will, "work" but an actual clutch type diff would be best.
It is kind of like comparing jacking off to sex.

the guy with the camaro. ever driven a car on the street with a spool? that is basically what a welded diff is. not fun on public roads. posi track is essentially a 1 way lsd.

if your learning start out with a VLSD it will work and allow you to learn. Do not do a welded or a clutch type till you know how to drive.
Welded is the least forgiving and I do not recommend it for daily use.
Regardless of what others say, its just not wise for the average or inexperienced driver.
Same goes for a clutch type, especially a 2 way which will lock up on de-acceleration. That is my opinion.

I chose to go with a Z32 VLSD and converted it to start out with. Haven't tried drifting on it yet, but so far I'm still satisfied.
People hate on VLSDs, but they're just bitches.

VLSD is a clutch type differential......
WTF, VLSD stands for Viscous Limited slip differential. For all intensive purposes it is different from what we call and people call Clutch pack differentials.
Stop trying to play the semantics game and stop trying to confuse people. Its documented.

VLSD's have clutch packs in them.... Please explain the difference between VLSD and "clutch pack type" diffs. Oh, and try to take it easy man. Your coming across like you're all worked up about it.

Do you have a daily or is this it? If you have a daily then screw it. Weld it till it breaks then get an lsd when you got the cash. You'll see once you start drifting how often you'll end up ghetto rigging your stuff just so you can get another run.

Even if you do daily it during the nicer months, welded is only rough on tires and mostly a pain while parking. You might squeal a little. Just make sure you weld it right, then you won't have to worry about blowing it out.

yup. I DD welded and that pretty much the only thing that makes it a bit uncomfortable especially backing up lol

yeah, i would say a vlsd is fine for daily, welded is just too much, go with a two way if your looking for something aggressive

2 way is fine for dd but alittle pricey
