i kind of remember a time that my clutch fan wasn't on all the time, but it is now. if it isn't supposed to be on all the time - what can i do to fix it. it doesn't look like it has any kind of sensor or anything

The clutch is seized up. After that happened to me three times last year, I finally switched to a dual 10" electric fan setup with a thermal switch. If you just want to keep the mechanical clutch fan, I'd suggest getting one from Nissan...maybe they'll last longer than the ones I got from AutoZone. Either route is a fairly easy DIY project.

Yep, not supposed to be on all the time. Lance is right.
Now on 103 degree days, idle at the fast food for 5 or so mins, Mine will stay on up to about 3K rpm for the initial take off in traffic for about 7 or so seconds and then it winds down. It makes such a cool noise too...but it is more strain on the water pump, robs heaps of power and needs to be replaced....if yours is not working like this. As a matter of fact, my one electric fan does not work at all. I have been toying with the idea of adding another ele. fan and getting two and taking the large pump fan off. You would gain some power, that is for sure.
That big old plastic fan locked up sounds like a large turbine!
