Hey, I got a 1995 240sx, and I think I'm starting to have problems with the Timing Chain. The two main symptoms are sometimes the car makes a horrible whine when it starts (mechanic said it was probably the chain) and the engine shakes around a bit when it starts. I did a search on this and I think it also pointed to the TC.

I got an estimate from two nissan dealerships, one wanted 500 dollars but kept referring to it as a timing belt, which made me worry. The other said 2000!!! So, I got three quetsions. First, are these symptoms indicative of a TC problem, and whats the normal going price for this?

"To replace the timing cover, upper and lower chains, tensioners, guides and sprockets is $2114.66+(tax) installed. "

O_O

Thanks.

the shaking could be the motor mounts. as for the other prob, without really hearing it myself, and going with what the other guys (mechanix) said, $2000 is a little steep. it can be a pain in the a$$ to complete that work, if you are up for it. otherwise, continue searching because there is a plethora of info on the timing chain. get a chilton manual to help in making your decision as it will steer you in the right direction.

well, i'm not exactly gifted at these engine mechancal stuff, but here's a wild stab at it. the whine might be caused by the timing belt instead of the timing chain, i don't think the timing chain whines but it more like raddles or shadders into a brilliant obis. You can replace the belt yourself, or maybe do some tighteing to see if it goes away. the studdering at start up could be caused by the ICV, if you have an aftermarket intake check and make sure it's connected correctly without bends. or maybe there might just be some cracks on the hose. hope it helps
