SR20 timing belt... Interference?

Is the SR20 black top engines timing belt an interference timing belt? The JDM motor is said to have 40k on it. Only 700 mi since the swap, belt was inspected for cracks, rot etc and looked good. Should I be concerned? What happens if the belt breaks?

Like Clark said "everybody says their sr only has 40k on it". It's pretty unlikely that they all only have 40k.
I also wouldn't put too much faith into someone who told you they inspected the "timing belt" on an sr and it didn't have any cracks.
SR is an interference engine, so yes it could be catastrophic if the chain broke. If you're planning on beating on the engine I would replace the chain, tensioner and guides.

only way to no for sure is if you got a clip...and even then...someone could have swapped clusters.but its unlikely...and as far the timing chain goes, i'm pretty sure its 90k miles and it needs to be replaced. i've replaced my chain tensioner twice though i think

No it has been 700 since the swap. I've got all reciepts for the engine and trans etc. I just want to know if I should worry about the chain or not. How much would it cost to do just to be safe or is it really not that big of a concern?

Like oldschoolrice stated if you plan on beating on your SR then you should definitely change guides chain n tensioner.

there are a few things that are a good idea to do when getting a clip
water pump, front main and rear main seal, oil pick up...
timing chain is also one
depends how cautious you want to be and how deep your pockets are

The car has 700 miles on it since the build. It seems that everything was addressed. If I were to call the guys who sold the engine would they know or should they be trusted? There must be some reputable places that don't just sell sr's that are shit. The current owner who is a friend of a friend said the compression was tested and everything was inspected before it was dropped in. I can't imagine someone would put this much money and time into a build and ignore the essentials.

Beat on it? As in daily drive it, some hard pulls and playing around? Or do you mean drifting, melting the tires, hard launches and total disrespect of the car?

honestly, you're asking alot of questions that are answered in the engine FAQ.

an SR engine really is no different than any other engine. it needs maintenence done at specific intervals.

since it's new to you, you need to perform a pretty thorough inspection of alot of stuff inside and outside of the engine.

Ok here it goes,First who or where is the reputable shop that did the swap and your willing to take someones word that they checked everything even when you say timing belt.it all depends on how your motor was previously taken care of which you don't know the motor was probably sitting in a crate somewhere for six months or so.It also sounds like you don't even own the car if your going to buy it double check everything before you buy it to cover your own a$$.The sr20 market is just like everything else in the world another field to possibly scam or screw you,so if you dont take the time to check it out properly and come back here two weeks after you bought saying that its making loud noises i am going to laugh at you.It is best to do the best possible preventative maintenance on the car if your going to daily the thing.I got bought my motor from a reputable place and it was very clean and i beat the snot out of it all the time,but dont take my word for your motor.

If your going to buy this thing do a little research because it doesnt have a timing belt and be sure to double check it!

Dude its not that people sell shitty SR's, which some do, but the condition of the engine is literately based on the maintenance done when it was in the Silvia. It's likely that its fine but you'll never know unless you inspect it. Also his credit went out the window when he said it was a belt; that's just a straight lie...

He corrected himself, I said belt. He said that him and Josh (my friend) took the valve cover off and inspected the chain and everything before they put it in. The compression was tested as well. It's not a million dollar job car but I can tell he took the time to put it together right. He didn't use cheap parts either and he knows his cars pretty well. He's also got a 94 TT Supra BPU, a 20G 07 STi and this was his third car. Josh has built many SR's and currently has two of them. I trust them. I see nothing that indicates a hackjob.

about japan star motors i cant comment because i dont know anything about them,but the morality is just check things out before you buy so you dont get screwed.

Fuck all that noise about the chain. I'd be worried about the oil pump before anything else. If you plan on cracking the engine open, I'd replace that with a new one. The chain question comes up because if you're pulling the oil pump off, might as well change the chain and chain guides while you're at it since they're pretty much accessible with the pump cover off.
