I pulled my tranny yesterday to replace the clutch that was fried mysteriously... I found the problem. You know how some clutch kits don't include a throw out bearing? Well it seems that the person who had my engine/tranny before me got one of those kits and didn't see a need to replace the bearing.
Because of that, the new stronger pressure plate helped to destroy the bearing and pressure weld it into a hunk of metal that will not turn and is forever seized onto the sleeve that goes on the output shaft. This siezure of the bearing would cause the pressure plate to constantly rub on what use to be a bearing and the lateral pressure pressed the sleeve firmly against the output shaft and didn't allow the slave cylinder to move the clutch fork and put the clutch in and out of adjustment.
The Spec stage 1 clutch that was in the tranny was only about 3000 miles old and would have had a great lifespan had they just replaced the throw out bearing.
As long as you have it torn apart... replace everything!
See attached picture for carnage.
