If my car wasn't giving me headaches I would be. Just when I think everything is fine something else needs to get fixed.

Really thinking of just looking for a cleaner chassis and just swapping on my items over.

It's been a lot of bad luck mostly. Typically always around dates where I've actually paid and been ready for a track event. Hell, my very first event with 626Drift my water pump decided to give out on me. I swapped it out at the track and simply couldn't get it to bleed properly afterwards (was trying the whole day).

Now it seems what I ruled out as just a minor issue (slightly tweaked radiator support) that I had planned for this summer might actually be bigger than I thought. Back in '08 my car was a victim of a hit and run in my own apartment complex. Front suspension on the driver's side is very loose. At first I thought it was my tension rod that I simply didn't tighten up properly, but it's gotten worse.

Tomorrow I'll be putting the car on a lift and giving it a proper inspection. I'm hoping it's just a busted tension rod bracket and it just gives me an excuse to get a Nismo power brace. If it turns out to be worse I'll really consider a new chassis.

It doesn't matter how fast or experienced anyone is. Wouldn't matter if someone comes with a LP640 or FXX, I'd just be happy that they came with.

I have a regular S13 non-turbo, lowered on coilovers w/ BFG tires on 350Z wheels. I don't recall exactly, but my best time at Streets of Willow was somewhere around 1:36. My car is not fast. I just enjoy circuit racing. :2f2f:

From what I see, same tech inspection as any drift competition.

With Speed Ventures, you self-tech your car, but if they catch something wrong that obviously wouldn't pass, they come down on you hard.

lol. That is basically it. I don't think circuit racing would be very fun on those plastic Federal Formoza FD1s. :p

The main requirement I believe is really enforced is that you have your battery tied down properly with the positive terminal covered.

there's a lot of grip events in the next few months.
speedventures is doing an autoX on Sat & Sun this weekend at CA Speedway
think it's around $80/day or $150 for two.
I'm going to try and make it for Sat at least.

Wish I had the inclination to wake early for Buttonwillow
iHaven't been there for like 10 yrs.

I think buttonwillow is totally worth the drive, but I usually spend the night on friday to guarantee I'm at the track on time on saturday morning.
Speed Ventures' tech sheet can be found on their website, but yeah it's just the essentials and a real helmet. like snell 2000 and better.

I just hope it doesn't rain.....

I also arrive the night before so I'm not driving at 5am. I looked to see how many people signed up for Buttonwillow that weekend, and there are well over 50 people. I'm wondering how packed the track is going to be, and how much track time I'll even get.

Are you in charge of this event joel?

Nope. I don't have that kind of time to organize an event.

When I did this in August, they had a full field of cars as well. It was broken down into a beginner, 3 intermediates, and one advanced run groups. Each group is about 20-25 minutes long and I believe I got 5 sessions in. On the track is maybe 20 cars. I still had plenty of room to do my thing. This track is pretty big.

I'm pretty sure I'm doing this now. Will have a final answer by monday at the latest.

Speedventures is usually pretty good with organization.
It's pretty much the only group i participate in these days.
Seldom do run groups end up bieng traffic jams (not saying it's never happened, but it's rare).

Although 50 cars registered now do sound like a lot,
esp considering the event is like 2 weeks away.

this thread is a great idea.
meeting up in a track event is more fun than a regular meet imo.
would be great to garner more interest in grip events.

Well I'm off to their autoX now.
I will be there today & tommorow in my green s14 or silver evo x.
hope to see some of you guys out there.

Lol. Nothing has changed since then. Well sort of.. I'll be using Motul 300V instead of V-Max this time around, and I increased the camber 0.5deg all around.

I haven't decided yet if I want to run on E85 instead of ~96 octane this time. I may need to take an extra tank of E85... not looking forward to that.

I hope my heel-toe technique has improved.. I sucked at it last time, and my clutch over heated twice.

Good news on my end. My car isn't completely jacked. Tension bracket was loose where the sway bar D link is. Seems one of the bolts snapped in half and the other was stripped.

Easy fix. This means soon as I get some new tires (within a few weeks) and an alignment done I'll actually be track ready.

No, you should get a SA2005 helmet. Pyrotect makes an affordable open face helmet. That's what I have. Don't get the M2005 helmet (motorcycle), not all events allow that helmet.

Speed Ventures is allowing M2005 helmets on the 12th.

You must have a helmet. We typically do not have helmets available for loan (though you can check with us to see if any are available), and we can not let you out on the track without a helmet. The recommended helmet is the latest Snell Automobile (SA) rated helmet (currently SA2005), although we will accept any Snell rated helmet, including M rated, 95 or newer. If you are going to buy a helmet, you should get the latest SA rating. We have helmets for rent with prior notice. Helmets should fit your head without play, but they shouldn't pinch your face too much so you look like a bulldog or a fish. Open faced helmets ARE permitted. Note that as of January 1, 2010, we will require Snell 2000 or more recent helmets.

Speedventures is super-lax with all the safety stuff.
helmets are no different.
I use an older, scraped to shit, motorcycle Bell helmet.
it's 'Snell 2100' rated, whatever that means.

I dont even recall the last time they've inspected my car before driving.
HOWEVER, they do keep a close eye on your car.
if you're not driving safe or if there something mechanically questionable,
they'll do something about it.

Imo they are lax where it probably shouldn't matter,
and dilligent where it does.

xpertsnowcarver
01-28-2010, 12:58 AM

Sign up man. Call in sick.

Its two weeks from now. I highly doubt the possibility of rain is accurate. I checked weather.com a week and a half ago and said it would rain on my gf's bday. Its not raining this weekend afterall.

Besides, my tires handle water extremely well. I don't think I'm going to get my slick tires this month anyway. I'll wait till mid-spring.

how much play in the wheel bearing is considered too much? or acceptable? I have about 1/4inch of play at the tire and 1/8inch or so at the hub.

who's going to the track this week??

xpertsnowcarver
02-09-2010, 11:59 PM
The wheel bearing is bad/loose when it has an obvious wobble and/or makes noise/vibration. If you have to excessively rock your car side to side, to get your wheels to wobble, then your fine.

So far its me and one other person.

Would you mind if I use your GoPro that day and try again?

Here's Nathan racing. His car took a lot of getting used too.. The stock struts, springs, and sway bars made the car feel a little sloppy.

There were a lot of nice cars. Lotus Elise, Exige, S2000, Viper SRT-10, Vette Z06, Porshe RS Turbos. The one dude in the 240SX showed up but didn't event want to talk to us... He drove up to us, then went and parked at the other end of the pit....

^^^ Do you know Who is the host . Is it the roval or infeild only, the roval is kinda booring with a low power car. All I see is the SCCA has the track rented on those dates. LMK Im interested.

I'm not sure exactly what course layout they are doing, but I'm hoping its the in-field as well. Calclub.com is hosting the event.

I was looking at their site yesterday. Price seems nice, but I'm just not a fan of the Big Willow track. I enjoy a more technical track.
