View Full Version : is an s14a REALLY worth more?

debate thread.

everyone (read: s14a owners) seems to think that a '97-98 is worth substantially more than a zenki because it is "rare".
it's not rare. it's a 240sx. the production numbers may be lower in those years, and it may have the more desirable front in, but i propose to you that a zenki with a color-matched kouki front end would fetch the same as an equally-equipped legitimate kouki.
a 240 is a 240 is a 240. i do not believe that anyone wanting a 240sx would be willing to pay a premium for certain years just because they had lower production numbers. it does not make sense, as these cars will not be sitting in a climate-controlled showroom. they will be driven, or at least hard parked.

I think its because they're newer with lower mileage on average. I dunno though. Why are Supra's so expensive? FD? Early generation 240z?

well I would rather have a 95 with a kouki front since if its not obd1 the only engine I could run would be ka.

Its all about personal preference. Some ppl like real origin, and some like to buy the cheap ass replica's and try to bring down the original shit!!!! sorry, its getting old. So yes, a zenki with a kouki front looks like a kouki, and there is no visible diffrence, but its not a kouki.

FD?
they're not, really
Early generation 240z?
it's actually a collector's car

I'll play devil's advocate. I would say they're worth more just based on the reason you already listed. Production numbers were lower then other generations of the s-chassis. '97s came in with 3655 produced and '98s at 1232. That's under 5000 combined, give it some years as retards crash them, I dunno I would say maybe there's 2500 some around give or take. And as these cars get older more will diminish, thus making it more "rare" to find. As long the demand remains the same, the price will stay or increase when the car reaches appreciation. Let's not mention some people like their shit exactly how it was from the factory. I can see the S-chassis with the same fate as the S30Z chassis has right now. You'll have those who will modify them, and then there will those who want a mint factory car.

the only reason id pay more is because its a newer year. less of a possibility it had the snot beaten out of it. and if it did, it was possibly less. but in all honesty i like the zenki face better the the kouki. and if i were in the market for an s14 and i can find one cheaper, and i like it better. well shit, looks like im gettin the older one dosent it:P im not a huge fan of either koukis(s14/s13) i like my chuki s13 and id rather have a zenki.

but at the same time, production numbers for zenkis:
1995: 25,114
1996: 7,334
and it's the same car. and the 95's (all of them or just early ones, i'm not sure) are OBD1, which i think would be a desirable trait.

That's almost 7 times more zenkis then there are koukis. The probability of finding a zenki is obviously higher. While yes, essentially there the same car. They came from the factory with a different option. A more desirable option at that [depending who you talk to]. Certain options, trims, etc. can make one certain car(s) worth more. The same could be said with s30 chassis or any chassis for that matter. I might not be an expert with s30's but I'm sure there's certain models that are worth more. Why would I spring for one thats worth more when I could build my own for less? Again, this depends which choir you're preaching to.

Private party VALUE on KBB is less than $5k. What it's WORTH is whatever people are willing to pay for them. There is a decent market for them, so the prices are usually higher than the value.

Rare and uncommon are very different

As O/P stated, these are 240sx..they are just uncommon. Sorta like a Conquest, or GLHS, or a 323 Turbo...Rare to me is like, a 70 Boss Mustang, or a C4 ZR1, or a Reventon ya know?

With that said though, I look at this way (assuming both stock)...

Lets assume you get a CLEAN zenki..you're gonna spend what? 4 to 5 k?
Whats a clean Kouki go for...6k to 7k?

If you are DIEHARD set on the Kouki front, you're going to easily pay 1000-2000 bucks for the front end and paint. At that point, I'd rather pay the small 'premium' for the Kouki from the get go.

you are correct they are all 240's but....

if someone was selling a zenki with kouki front and i found a og kouki for the same price i would choose the kouki. why?

i trust a newer car, i dont trust cars that have new body panels, i hate the zenki gauge cluster, in some cases converting a zenki into a full kouki will cost the same or maybe even more.

i dont care about production #'s nor do i care about rarity its just more about getting the best for my money.

This.

If you're buying a Zenki specifically to go Kouki, you have to take into account how much it'll cost to have the front end(or the entire car repainted professionally).

A lot of the Kouki's you find out there normally have paint that's in really good shape. Can't say the same for Zenki's.

Personally, I'd pick up a Zenki and go from there. I'm the type to add OEM Aero to any car. So, I'd need that shit painted anyway. Might as well have the entire car repainted professionally and have everything match.

Lots of my friends believe that the Kouki appears more aggressive. I suppose to people who know nothing about these cars the S14a's are more of a sports car than Zenkis.

Getting to it, I think that OBD1 Zenkis are nice, but I'm not sure of how many were produced or when the change to OBD2 came. I've always been told that OBD1 is easier to tinker with because you don't have emissions junk.

I did just that, bought a zenki and am coming close to finishing the kouki conversion

why

got a 5 speed for a decent price with minor front damage
it's obdi
didn't have to come up with 6k at once
wanted the japanese front and rear bumpers instead of the usdm ones

after all it's said and done, i'm ~5.5k into it
got exactly what i wanted
and i'm very pleased with the body parts that are on it

I still need paint but that would have been the same regardless of which model I bought

Kouki's are a little more rare, hell even zenki's are sorta rare to see on the streets BUT I think most of the reason why kouki s14's go for more is desirability of the aggressive front end, I'd say about 99.9 percent of people would prefer the kouki front end over the zenki front end and the price will reflect that.

Sure you can do the conversion but a lot of people don't even know what they are doing and they would rather just spend the extra money for a s14 that's kouki out of the box. I'm the kinda guy that would've gotten a zenki for super cheap, throw a JDM kouki front end and repaint the whole car but telling a lot of other people to do the same they just didn't seem motivated to do all the work to make it a kouki.

I would never pay the premium of a kouki over a zenki.
there's just nothing that justifies it.

even if both were the same price, I'd opt for a zenki.
to me it the zenki has a more sleeper, friendlier look.
some ppl mistake my zenki for a camry.

that being said I don't dislike the Kouki.
I would just buy whatevers in decent condition & cheap.
The condition of a car isn't going to change drastically much over the course of 1-2yrs.

that's exactly what i did picked up my zenki for dirt cheap. my friend had brand new jdm kouki headlights which i bought for cheap and also found the other parts for cheap.

i've always loved the kouki front-end but i took a route that actually was fit for me (i have financial problems) and now my car is coming together now.

01-14-2010, 05:04 PM
the main reason the kouki's are worth more is because people like the design better. while a 95 with a kouki front end would be more preferable, the problem is two fold. first in order to get the kouki front end you either have to spend knocking on $2k to get everything new. or buy used. the problem buying used, is that there aren't that many kouki's to begin with. and when they get crashed, it's usually the front end that gets killed. not always, but most of the time.

so now on top of buying the expensive new, or hard as hell to find used parts, then they have to be painted.

it's just MUCH easier to buy a kouki car to begin with. plus you get the nicer looking tail lights, full sweep tach, the joystick power mirror switch, the side skirts, etc.

Afterchange you say? I'd love to see where in documentation that is what It meant, as if it's in any sort of manual or FSM I've obviously over read it.

I find it hard to believe that Nissan would purposely label a car B before A (in regard to chassis) when naming them. Could it be possible? Certainly - I just doubt it. If anyhting, the Kouki's should be revision B, not A.

And in reference to dingdong, it's right on the money. Old heads didn't talk about chassis codes like this. You don't see guys 'oh well i got a FMC68 chassis.....' they say 'I've got a 68' Mustang

I'd say yes to the OP's question.

Obvious:

Younger then zenki (if only by a year or two)
Better looking (to many people)
Possibly fewer miles

Not so obvious:
Fewer kouki S14s than the lowest production year of zenkis
Minor changes including fabric differences, built-in antenna vs whip antenna,

I never liked kouki front THAT much, the edgy aggressive front end doesn't flow well with the rest of the car. R33 and zenki s14 share that curvy theme that are don't scream sporty but elegant.

And no this is not to make myself feel better cuz I have a zenki.

I always loved koukis. Would i ever consider buying one? No, they're over priced.
Instead, i was patient, found an obd1 zenki for ridiculously cheap and pieced together a kouki front, also for really cheap. Instead of having a $6k "rare" kouki, i have a $2k obd1 Kouki, which is much more desirable, to me atleast, than having a real kouki.
just my 2 cents.

Officially Kouki is S14mc. Therefore S14b is Before MC and S14a is After MC. It's not some "forum dingdong" it's how most parts suppliers differentiate the change.

Ever heard of AD and BC on the calendar?

Yeah, old dingdongs talk in .5's or half years... Same shit different era.

To the OP at hand:
Two years ago it was stupid with Kouki's going for 2x a comparable zenki's price. Now, most prices seem to follow blue book with newer years scaling reasonably. Newer cars will always be worth more money regardless.

Much like the B versus A misnomer, BC and AD were also 'terms' developed from a select bunch of people to help them signify a difference, in relation to something specific in their respective relm of study/life/information.

I hate detracted form the original thread, but I would really like to know if there is any real meaning (if that's even the right word to use there) behind the designation, or if it was just something that 240 people came up with on their own. I know there is no "B" or "A" designation in FAST, or in Worldpac, or in Carquest Databases....

I mean it really doesn't mean jack shit in the grand scheme of things, but the truth of the matter is, that it's about as official of a term as 'hellaflush' ya know? Nothing wrong with it, but no real 'definition' either. It doesn't effect me either way, but I've always found it curious as to where that "a" vs "b" thing came from.

In the end S14a is worth more because people are willing to spend more.

Imo koukis have better parts too, glass headlights, sideskirts, well that's about it actually... but glass headlights mean a world of a difference to me with projectors. Rarity comes into play also, nothing beats having an original kouki personally. Sure you can convert everything in a zenki to kouki, but if you have an all original kouki with matching vins it will be worth more.

Built-in vs. whip?

Do you mean the auto-retracting vs. stationary? Idk the terminology, but my 98 and previous 97 S14a both had stationary antennas that always like to unscrew themselves

Its obvious a newer car will sell for more than an older car most of the time. People like the fact that it came kouki from the factory.

My logic is why pay a premium for a kouki when I am already going to change the bumper, hood and fenders even if I were to get a Kouki. Also there is the OBD1 factor esp in SOCAL. Do whatever floats your boat. There will never be a wrong or right answer to this.

the premise of this thread is just so fail...

People WANT late year s14s therefore the price of a late year 240 is more than an early year. It's simple market forces... did you never take an economics class?

The reasons why they wan't it doesn't make a difference. A fact is a fact, people want it there for its more expensive. Yes, you may disagree with the reasons why they want it but that makes no difference in the end. You are probably just in the small 1% of the market that would prefer a zenki for 5,000 instead of a kouki for 5,000.

Wait, thats my damn idea..........

And if we're talking about production numbers and rarity, what about verts? Yes twice as many were made vs. kouki's (about 8300), but they're production started 5 years prior. Because they're rare do they fetch more then a kouki? Stock for stock, no. So the answer to this is simple, as is every purchase you make. Do you want the product? That will determine what its "worth".

I only owned Koukis.. Love how they look and yes, I believe it is worth more than
Zenkis but shouldn't be so much...

I have the misfortune of owning a 96. I prefer the Zenki but OBD2 is killing me. My CEL is always on because of some added emissions failure.

At least it's rare... I think :P

^^^^ correct.

still its the same car and for 800 bucks you can get all the parts to make a zenki look like a kouki

$800, no way
more like $2k if done right and with hook ups

fenders
hood
headlights
core support
corner lamps
turn signals
foglights
japanese front and rear bumper
tail lights
japanese wing
zenki sides

whose got these for $800 and in good to excellent quality?

Well, if you remove the JDM front/rear bumpers, wing, sides, and tails, it could be possible(around $1k).

Even then, it's still pretty hard.

Since when did a Kouki have Zenki sides, JDM wing and bumpers?

Your list must not have looked long enough to support your argument.. I understand.

That's all exterior, you would still need the Kouki cluster, mirror adjustment knob, rear deck lid, possibly the center console so you can have the divider, seat fabric is also different if you were crazy enough to care about that.

Rear bumper is not needed, but regardless you'd still need the oem kouki sideskirts (same as jdm) or if it tickles your fancy you can get the jdm zenki sides... even though it's not kouki.

not worried how long or short my list is or what you think of it
that's just my interpretation of what a kouki should be

I have 2 zenkis and wouldn't have it any other way. But koukis look amazing! I think once you have a zenki you won't really know how much you like every day more and more they grow on you fast and then love it.I had half of my kouki converstion and I sold it cuz the zenki front end grew on me. I personaly think 95 are the best year to have cuz of the obd1 but that's just me .

After getting all the parts for a kouki front conversion it's time for a LEGIT paint job (LEGIT means equal to or better than OEM) Unless the car will be tracked.

For all you street cars out there this is what separates the men from the boys.

Be prepared to start seeing primer city 10 tone s14 kouki "track cars" all day long.

v1. People who are die hard Zenki fans (Are ones who can't afford Kouki's) LOL

2. If you bought a stock Zenki for $3000, and someone ask to trade for identical stock Kouki for $3,000, 99.% of people would trade. Why? Well, Newer and potentially lower miles. Better resale value, looks are subjective, and fewer made so more rare than Zenki.

3. Whats the difference between a Fiberglass Shelby replica or Ferrari replica and the real thing? DUH. So what is the difference between a 95 zenki with a kouki parts and a real kouki, obviously the title will say 1995 240sx and not 1997/1998. In addition, messing up OEM 1995 and changing paint will actually depreciate it's value to many people who are Original collectors.

PS3 vs. PS3 Slim, same thing. BUT a tad bit cooler. + more $ to play.

Yea Rich had the full C-West kit, and the gold Simmons mesh rims. He picked them up off of a friend of mine. Forgot he had the Bomex wing too, but I'm pretty sure I had it on my car before him, hence my last quote.
