tach signal

I did my first swap and got a tach signal to show on the turbo timer. Not on the sohc cluster obviously. But than took the motor out and stuck into the 93 I bought. Tied the yellow-red from the ecu to the yellow-red to the tach on gauge cluster and still nothing happens. I am not getting any thing from the turbo timer. Am I doing somthing wrong or has somthing been cut? I don't know, it's killing me!! Please help.
