I recently dropped my oil pan and was hoping not to see big chunks of metal or pennies or other stuff I've seen people find, and to my surprise I saw a big...big piece of metal. Big.

Upon inspection it looks a metal mesh filter tube thing and must have been snapped off a pipe. I'm not using real terms because I have no idea what these things are. I'm just a little afraid because I've been driving my car around a little bit with this thing completely broken off.

Can anybody help me with
What it is?
What to do?
Is my dented oil pan still usable if I un-dent it a bit?
Am I screwed?

damn bro.... that is the oil pickup for your motor... Basically filters out shit from the oil pan so it doesnj't pick up metal debris that goes to your head....

You can buy that pickup thing for SR... Not a big deal...

Oil pickup is right. That disc like object is the strainer.

How much potential damage did I do running without it? I probably only drove like 2 or 3 miles total and the motor sounded very healthy.

yes u can "dent" the pan and use it.

I guessing you hit hard, really hard, enough to break it which is good cause If you would have dented it it would of restricted it from picking up oil. your oil level was high enough that it still managed to pick up through the tube

Those are notorious for falling off on SRs
Marco from the SR20Store goes so far as to remove the oil pans on SRs and tach weld them

Not much damage if you don't find other crap in your motor. Dented pans, you have to remove ALL the dents. Every single one cause that can sort of mess up oil pick and apparently you did a lot of damage. Anyways, pound all the dents out buy the new pick up and done...

Also, if you are going to buy another pickup, get one through the nismo shop. They are 20bux + shipping. Be sure to grab the S14 model pickup as it has a better design.

THIS IS AN EPIDEMIC!!!!

Hi Peeps,

This is seriously the first thing I check on a car when doing a mechanical diagnosis if the car is still using a stock OILPAN. Even if the pick up is still intact, if you see the imprint of the mouth in the inside of the pan then you know you need to hammer the shitout of your pan or get an updated pan.

I highly recommend a tomei oil pan.

If you are still using a stock lower oil pan I urge all of you to pull the oil pan, replace your OIL PICK UP with a late model oil pick up (has additional support welded to it for rigidity) if you havent already.

This is the NUMBER ONE reason why people lose rod bearings and fry their motors.

That happened to me a few years back. Had my car too low and paid the price. Sounds like you caught it in time.

Eyh, I wouldn't go 'that' far, as FWD motors burn our bearings as well, and they don't have the issue of breaking these off.

I had mine tack welded...hell from factory it's only got a flimsy tack or two
