Hey, I'm thinking of getting a 1973 240Z but it is registered in Nevada.
What steps would i need to take to get it registered in California? I checked in the dmv site but it doesnt say much about pre smog cars. Do i still have to get the car checked to see if it is California legal?

you will need to have your local dmv inspect the car. usually they just check to make sure the vin on the car matches the vin on the title.
since it is pre-smog i don't think they will require anything else to register it.

Yeah, my car had Washington plates on it, they basically set up an appointment where local DMV people actually came to my house and inspected the car. Took like 5 minutes they looked at the VINS and stuff. That is the only thing that is really different that you have to do, besides getting it smogged.

Legally the seller of the car is supposed to smog it for you unless otherwise noted.

isn't any vehicle older than 1975 smog exempt in Cali ?

yes. '75 and older is smog exempt.
the op will not need a smog check in order to register his vehicle.
(however, if the dmv is feeling nasty they can do an inspection to make sure that the original emissions equipment is still in place.)
