View Full Version : Removing Aftermarket Steering Hub?

Switching all of my parts to a new shell and i'm in the process of trying to remove my aftermarket hub. Is there any good tool to use to do this? I have a regular steering wheel puller, but there are obviously no threaded holes on the aftermarket hub that could be used with that type of tool. The hub does have 2 square holes on the sides of it and i'm wondering if a pulley puller might be able to be used? I saw that suggested once when I was searching, but no hard evidence that this would actually work. What have you guys used?

Why cant you pull the wheel off, take off the big nut behind the wheel, install the wheel again and then yank the hub/wheel off at once? Thats what Ive always done...Its just like removing the stock wheel.

Unless Im missing something in your post..

Unbolt the big nut that holds the hub onto the steering shaft.

Gently tap around the hub with your palm and the hub should back out.

For a stubborn hub, you can also gently tap with a rubber mallet upwards away from the shaft and the hub should back out.

another tip would be keep the center nut on, but loose till the whole wheel comes off, so the steering wheel wont smash straight into your face...lol

You shouldn't be yanking so hard that the wheel goes flying off.

Gentle pressure does it.

I've had aftermarket hubs be a little stubborn when trying to remove them, but you can buy a universal puller (one with three pulling arms and a threaded "pusher" screw in the middle) Just make sure the puller is on there securely and take a little time and it should come off without any problems.

Bingo!!^^ but insted of buying it go rent it at autozone

What I've alwasy done is stick a flat head in between the hub and interior trimming and gently pry off or if it's a real pain take off your wheel and go rent a 3way pulley from autozone and pry it off you might have to unbolt your ignition interior trimming to wrap the pulley around the hub. Goodluck!

Thanks for all the input guys! yea I've tried the mallet/pulling technique and no luck quite yet. the above tool looks like it might work. Like I said before, I have a regular steering wheel puller that consists of a piece of metal with slots in it, a center "pushing" bolt like the puller shown above, and then 2 bolts to secure the slotted piece of metal to a stock wheel. Obviously the aftermarket hub does not have those bolt holes to attach the puller like the stock wheel does. So I was ponder the idea of laying the slotted metal piece of the puller against the hub, attaching a vice grip to each end ( in place of the bolts) and then using that center bolt to push the hub off of the spine. This would replicate the action of the puller as if it was actually bolted to the hub as it looks like I can get the puller center completely flat and square against the hub. This idea still sounds a bit risky to me though (not worried about chipping the hub because it has a boot that covers it completely, more worried that the vice grips would not hold), so I might try the above 3-arm puller first.

EDIT: I thought I'd give an update for anyone else that may have this problem. I decided to try the method I described above and it worked perfectly. Advanced Auto Parts Steering wheel puller (very cheap there, or you can rent one from them) plus 2 cheap vice grips. It popped right off without any problems at all.

+1 for Autozone.

First time I put on my Momo hub I didn't pay attention to orientation. It was used too, so I couldn't get it back off to make it straight. Took 10x as long just to rent the damn thing than to pull the hub off.
