Hey guys, I just recently got my coilovers from Megan and they're great but the ride is pretty rough. Pretty bouncy. I believe the spring rates for those are 8k in the front and 6k in the back. Is there any reason why the difference between the front and backs? If I were to get 6K springs for the fronts, would that make the ride better? Are they worth the $160 that they are for the front springs?
One more thing I'd like to point out: in the front wheel well, just above the tire is a metal wall that is mighty close to the tires now, I'm afraid if I bottom out going on the freeway it'll slice the tires open. Can I just bang that thing flat so it doesn't pop the tires?
If you guys don't know what I mean, I'll take pictures tomorrow.
Oh, I drive a 91' S13 Fastback.
All been covered. Search.

yes bang the lip flat and if you go any lower I would tuck you light harness or else you will rub through them and I know you do not want any of that.

Here's a write-up for tucking your harness and getting rid of that metal wall thing you're scared of popping your tires on:

the pics in the link are dead though...
btw, just wondering, are your megans streets or track coilovers?

the 8k/6k coils are streets.
To OP: just set your dampening to full soft if the ride is too harsh for you.

Also, there's a reason the fronts have a higher spring rate...its called you're fucking engine. The front of the car is alot heavier than the rear hence the higher spring rate.

Is there any reason why the difference between the front and backs?
Yes, there is some reason for the difference between the "front" and "backs".
Do you want to know what that reason is or are you just asking if a reason exists?
The reason is because your weight distribution is noseheavy.
If I were to get 6K springs for the fronts, would that make the ride better?
Ride quality is highly subjective so this question is impossible to answer. You have to try and see for yourself.
Are they worth the $160 that they are for the front springs?
Worth is highly subjective so this question is impossible to answer. Is $160 worth it to you? It's worth it to me if my car handles better, but I'm not you.
Can I just bang that thing flat so it doesn't pop the tires?
I don't know. Can you swing a hammer? How do I know what you can and cannot do?
Yes, anyone with a hammer can "bang that thing flat so it doesn't pop the tires".
I'm sick of trying to read stupid people's mind. Think carefully about what you want to know and phrase your question carefully.

And to show you I'm not trying to be a jerk to you, these are the questions I think you should have asked, but I don't really know what you want.
1) Why is the front spring rate different than the rear?
2) Would a 6K front spring rate make the ride less rough and less bouncy?
3) Is $160 a good price for front springs?
4) What is the best way to modify the metal lip for more clearance?

Purchasing those crappy coilovers and then putting more money into them in a feeble attempt to make them suck less.

So when you say bouncy do you mean stiff???

Okay, let me try this again..
I drive a S13 Hatch so the weight distribution is more evened out than say a S13 coupe. I noticed some other coilovers, like tein basics have more of an evened out spring rate difference between the front and rear. Why such a large difference between the front and back then?
You're right, I shouldn't have asked if the softer springs will make the ride quality better. What I meant to ask was, would it make the car ride less bouncy and rough. I thought about it, and $160 doesn't seem too bad if it does help the ride. My issue would be if it doesn't help, I don't think Megan will be willing to take it back.
And finally, I'd like more clearance above the front tires for when I do put in the new springs for I'm worried it will travel a bit more than the already do. That metal lip just above the center of the tire is awfully close as is. What would be the best way for me to add more clearance?
When I say bouncy, I mean when I'm driving slow on the freeway during rush hour, the rear of the car seems to "bounce" while the fronts seem to be the cause of the rears shaking. I dunno if that makes any sense. The front wheels will go over a mound and be so stiff with it that it will send a shockwave to the back and the rears will just bob. Another example of how the car rides is that when I'm driving faster, maybe 15-20mph, on less than acceptable roads I feel every little bump, rough ride. Both dampeners are set to mid-way. I'm guessing I need to make the rear dampeners stiffer and the fronts softer. When I first got the car I set the dampeners to full soft in the front and it didn't change the roughness much..
Thanks..
