Hi,

I gave a car to a friend of a friend a few days ago and I didn't have the title. I filled out a form 227 (transfer of title with duplicate title). I was just realized it was supposed to be notarized, but I didn't have that done. I also already did the release of liability online.

My question is what is going to happen when she takes it to the DMV to do the transfer of ownership and it's not notarized?

I am worried because I really don't know her, and now she is causing a lot of drama after I try to be nice and gave her the car. I really don't want to deal with her.

Hopefully they will just bypass that, however if they do take that into consideration they will give you back the paperwork or tell you to fill out another one that is notarized. And if she is causing a lot of drama tell her to deal with it and its a free car.

It's none of your concern since it is a gift. I don't know anyone nice enough to even give anyone a car. You have a good heart. Hopefully the DMV will bypass it.

they will accept paperless title transfers without them being notarized. As long as the title was in your name then everything will be fine the DMV will know whats up.

Thanks for your replies everyone. I guess I will hear about it if she has trouble.

She left a really nasty message on my phone saying she had to spend 4 hours cleaning it and basically calling me a slob.

Then she accused me of endangering her life because the car was dangerous to drive! I told her it stalled and I didn't know what was wrong with it...she said it was cool and her bf was mechanic. She had the car for 2 weeks and had the whole time to decide if she wanted it before we did any paperwork.

UGg, sorry for bitching...I just usually don't involve myself with these kind of people and this is what I get for trying to be nice.

I think it only has to be notarized if it was under a lien. Check the papers again, because I had to deal with this just last year and I tried to forget the pain CA DMV put me through.

That's how I read it originally too, and that's why I didn't bother to get it notarized. But then I thought I read that it did need to be after I had already given her the paperwork. I haven't heard back from her, so I dunno if she's taken it to the DMV yet and if there was a problem.
