View Full Version : lightsource's S13 DOUBLE BUILD!

Yeah that's right... I'm building 2 S13 240sx's, both with SR20DET, with a chance of building a track car, more details inside...
Just a side-bar, I want to make this thread as easy to read/understand and clutter-free as possible. So if I need to express detail in a picture I will, so I won't have a picture on the screen that takes up your whole monitor, just making it easier on everyone.
So I currently have 3 S13's...
1. 1989 240SX (My First 240SX)
http://img527.imageshack.us/img527/2918/pic1stocksr.jpg
then after that I started doing a few upgrades, which aren't all pictures.
http://img19.imageshack.us/img19/9231/pic2upgrades.jpg
these were the only wheels I could afford at the time that were good looking to me, so I did it, the wheels played a huge role in making the car look a lot better to me, but as you will see, pispoor preplanning caused some problems got a really great deal and enjoyed these wheels. Thanks Jackson/Sonic Motor!
http://img19.imageshack.us/img19/1024/pic3pisspoorpreplanning.jpg
...should've got my damn camber/fender rolling done! rears were rolled though.
Got another set of upgrades, battery, intercooler, boost controller... such a huge difference, and then everything was ruined, thanks neighbors! Completely proper working Greddy intercooler that I got on the cheap, damnit! Causing for some DEFINITE unwanted color schemes. and driving of a beetle for the day it was inoperative.
http://img11.imageshack.us/img11/9166/pic4intercoolerfiasco.jpg
The week before the car is sold, I get into an accident, which threw the entire SELLING of the car off considering the damage caused, but I believe everything will work out fine, the buyer still holds interest in the entire deal.

2. 1990 240SX (Thanks Big E)
Got it with a blacktop and some other nice upgrades that I’ll be putting on the project car.
The engine in here will be going into 240SX #4, pics soon!
http://img11.imageshack.us/img11/854/pic6my2nds13.jpg
May be using this car as a track car/crash box, some chassis fabrication and serious business could be in order!
3. 1991 240SX (Thanks mazersx, legit shell, appreciate it!)
At this point I was collecting shells like no other, so this will be the project car and what will be most documented in this build. Got it the week after Black Friday, mad deal! Came with power everything, and a sunroof AND A/C components!
http://img527.imageshack.us/img527/6158/pic7my3rds13.jpg
So here’s the beginning of my project, I don’t know when I started but for the sake of argument let’s say I started December 1st.

Working on the interior, bought SEM Color Coat Landau Black (15013), works very well. I need to give the dash a second coat, but this stuff works great! If you want black interior paneling and you’ve got good quality panels that are blue/brown, just get this stuff save yourself some money and time searching the for sale threads.

Got some work done for the project car, Nismo Power Brace had a stripped bolt coming out of the ’90 240sx, so we had to blow torch it and weld a new stud in there, got it installed, fit perfectly. Thanks Manny!
http://img41.imageshack.us/img41/2205/pic9powerbrace.jpg
... This is just the first post, and I haven't added ALL of the details but I'll be sure to update as much as possible. The redtop should be in the project car by the end of the weekend!

Do you just spray it over the current panels?

Thank you :) I figured a brand new power brace was out of the question.

Purchased it from ToolTopia.com (http://www.tooltopia.com/sem-paints-15013.aspx?utm_source=googlebase&utm_medium=cse&utm_term=SEM15013&utm_campaign=googlebase_18u)
As for the painting of the panels, I washed them off with Palmolive to make them nice, dry and ashy, let them dry and got my spray on.

The SR’s been removed from first 240sx, removed everything from the bottom end of the car, once we pick up the shell for the second project car we will move all of the exterior, engine will probably be done last. As for the interior we’ll be stripping all of it and transplanting that interior into the second project car. I will be piecing my interior together. I have most interior panels, just need to find manual seat belt compatible pillars!
http://img707.imageshack.us/img707/8909/pic13pipediffandfitments.jpg
Got some actual engine work done, nothing drastic at all, just removed my manifold and turbo and motor mounts and a few things I need to take off for the actual engine block. I’ve decided to go with flat black engine enamel on the entire block - any tips on this would be greatly appreciated.
http://img705.imageshack.us/img705/3817/pic14engineremoval.jpg
I figured the turbo would be in bad condition because everyone was telling me that I needed a leakdown test… I guess not, however I did see some suspected blow by oil trails (see picture & quote below), maybe that could’ve caused the problem because I didn't have the problem after I actually posted about it on the forum.
http://img707.imageshack.us/img707/7907/pic16turbo2.jpg
This only happens to me when I'm idling for more than 1 minute, my exhaust starts to billow with white smoke, two things I can do to stop it is just continue driving and it won't happen OR I can turn the car off and when I turn it back on the smoke will stop coming out, whether it be at a drive-thru or a stop light, as long as I idle for a while it'll happen.
I think it's oil leaking but I don't know where to check and what to replace.
What do you all think?
TIA

Alrighty! Back with more news…
Plans have sort of changed, not for the worse but rather for the indifferent. I spoke with my bud Manny and he told me that it wouldn’t be too practical to do what I wanted to do, which was painting the engine block and even though it may sound like a minimal task since the engine is out… It really isn’t and I don’t have a car right now so for me to paint the engine block would be a waste of a couple of days. So fuck the bullshit, let’s get this car RUNNING!!!
Jan 11, 2010
Removed most of the interior and fuel pump from the crashed car… Fuck removing the dash for the carpet, I’m going to do the carpet on Project Car 1 and Project Car 2. All of this interior will be painted and will go into Project Car 2. No pics… Just obviousness, of course I’ll have pics of the crashed S13 once it’s stripped though.
Got the engine bay cleaned up, this thing is clean as hell, I’d eat off of the cross-member, but then it’d get dirty :(
http://img59.imageshack.us/img59/7638/pic17enginebaycleanup.jpg
Replaced my Water Pump
http://img709.imageshack.us/img709/1138/pic18waterpumps.jpg
Jan 12, 2010
Got some experience with the S13 Redtop intake manifold.
Let’s see what I learned… There are one or two brackets that it has to support the lower plenum and let me tell you… They’re ABSOLUTELY USELESS! Take them off and never have them bug you ever again, me and my friend Alex spent 15 minutes trying to figure out why the intake manifold that we removed EVERY BOLT for wouldn’t come off, looked around a little on the forum and sure enough found this Official Write-Up for the Greddy Intake Manifold (http://zilvia.net/f/tech-talk/211615-s13-sr-greddy-intake-manifold-official-write-up.html), thanks burnsauto!
I initially removed this manifold because my IACV wasn’t working correctly, no idle change after modification of the screw, then my dumbass didn’t realize that I had screwed the replacement IACV’s screw in all the way… No biggie except for 2 things…
1: I cracked the screw a little bit but it’s easy to turn when you’re doing it in the RIGHT DIRECTION!!!
2: I cracked the screw a little bit because I wasn’t turning it in the right direction and it’s fucking plastic.:duh:
Altogether I think it will turn out okay. Hopefully the IACV was my idling problem!
http://img508.imageshack.us/img508/3346/pic20intakemanifoldiacv.jpg
I went to the nearest alternator shop, got my shit rebuilt yo! (Do you really need pics? It’s an alternator, it’s rebuilt, and you’ll see it when it’s on the engine… and its 50 fucking degrees outside! Much too cold for me.)
Last minute surprise addition!
http://img37.imageshack.us/img37/5122/pic19poncamho.jpg
Picked these up from big Manny! :D
Now that I’ve got these, it’s time to beef up my head, not ANYTHING major just some tomei rocker arms.
So on the agenda for Jan 14, 2010 is…
1. Reinstall All Motor Mount Brackets on to Project Car 1 Redtop Motor
2. Install Motor Mounts
3. Install Short Shifter
4. Install Exhaust Manifold
5. Install Turbo
6. Install Turbo Elbow
7. Install A/C Bracket & Compressor
8. *Secret Step*
9. Install Injectors
10. Install Downpipe
11. Install Tie Rod Boots & Rack Bushings
After all of these steps have been completed… It is then time to drop the motor into the chassis.

FIRST UPDATE IN A GOD AWFULLY LONG TIME...
Here goes!
Jan 14, 2010
This entire procedure was a lot more difficult than it should have been but seeing as how megan doesn't like using quality metals for their studs and bad/inconsistent threads for their 4bolt manifold, it makes things a lot more difficult than it should be.
http://img11.imageshack.us/img11/3348/pic21manifoldandpressur.jpg
This apparently wasn't a good enough job however, maybe a week later the car developed an extremely bad exhaust leak, the 4-bolt gasket was evaporated and somehow my downpipe disconnected itself???
http://img651.imageshack.us/img651/4766/pic23manigasketw.jpg
(this went down on Jan 26th)
Jan 16, 2010
Next up was assembling the rest of the engine, now that all of the gaskets to the head were complete it's time for ac comp and alternator. The brackets for the A/C were made by CodyAce.
On a side note he's got great customer service, I called him up because the belt that he sent me didn't actually work for my compressor/bracket, reason being was because his buddy who has the same setup as me has a different bracket so the tensioner wheel sits differently, he simply refunded my belt money and told me which belt to get, spent a good amount of time with him on the phone good guy. :naughtyd: And as of right now I STILL haven't gotten the belt, no reason in getting the belt if I don't get the system charged first. (More on that later)

Jan 20, 2010
The new car is ready for it's heart and the old one is slowly losing it's luster minus the fact that it's already fubar. I've decided to trash her once all of the parts have been removed but I'm keeping the steering wheel for keepsake ;)
http://img337.imageshack.us/img337/5/pic24swapreadyold240.jpg
We finally got the engine in and prepped from the bottom, driveshaft and diff and all that crap installed. The VLSD isn't going to be mentioned much because the damn thing is trash. It needs a rebuild so I'm going back to the welded differential from my old car. As for the VLSD I may get it rebuilt or just buy one that works depending on what would be the better choice.

Decided to go with sound deadening and bought some dynamat. I'd also been working on the interior for a bit, got all the basics in, now to match the rest of the interior! Looking for JDM B pillars for Manual Seatbelts and a Headliner.
http://img153.imageshack.us/img153/954/pic32q.jpg
The problems never end, got a new ISIS Power Steering A/N line to replace my leaky high pressure line. Found the cause for a boost leak I was having. Time to replace all new couplers for my intercooler setup!
Now... To explain why I haven't been able to drive my car since late april.
http://img687.imageshack.us/img687/8003/pic34j.jpg
Driving home and about two streets before I get home the car starts running funny, starts misfiring, so I make it home pop the hood and sure enough the spark plug has flown out as well as the coilpack melting. In addition to that the spark plug would not screw back into it's place, the threads had been destroyed causing me to have to send the engine to get repaired.
Got it started the next day, took it to remove the engine and send off with Mario for an engine rebuild. Nissan rebuild kit, cosworth metal head gasket, arp head studs, rocker arm stoppers, cams.
After diagnosis from Mario he told me there was pitting on a couple pistons, not sure how that even happens. Had him rebuild the engine fully, new rings, bearings, pistons & rods.
It's about time to get the car running again. Taking the car to SR motorcars to get tuned and after that I install my new suspension
http://img225.imageshack.us/img225/4452/pic35suspension.jpg
although it has been a lengthy process, I feel like a lot of progress has been made.
although the car has been painted I won't be showing pictures until the paint has been colorsanded.
Currently the car is at Joel's (xpertsnowcarver) crib getting finished, this week is Koyo radiator and the car starts!

yeah, I was sick of all of the problems I had in the past with my engine so I figured this was my chance to get a fresh start so that's what I did. Pretty clean engine setup now, and I'm getting it tuned soon so it should be running correctly for a reasonable amount of time.

Had to change water pump, thermostat and clean out the water system. Not sure what was in this engine but this block has caused me more trouble than it has happyness. The block's turbo coolant inlet was stripped, we finally fixed it by JB welding an A/N fitting inside of the inlet and that became the new unstripped port for the turbo line, got a custom line made and no more coolant leak.

Great paint job overall, everything was done great except for a few things were overlooked (at no fault to the painter)
After a week of trying to figure out why the clutch wouldn't engage after more than 3 miles of driving, I decided to take it to xpertsnowcarver, finally found out what was wrong and fixed the problem. The car has been running ever since.

As of 9/12, these are the issues with the 2nd build:
Misfire on Cyl 1
Broken Clutch Fan
Broken Water Pump
^^ these two happened simultaneously as a result of another, broken fan = broken water pump.
So once again the car is out of commission, the plan is to take the car to SR Motorcars this week after I install the water pump and clutch fan.

So back to this thread's resurrection after almost 2 years... sorry for the delay but to be quite honest I wasn't up to going through all of the things that was wrong with my car, especially since they were bugging the shit out of me. I've documented as much as I could have but it still isn't much.
To pickup where I left off Sergio's (blue car) engine has been through a lot and we've been trying to get everything going but it seems that every time we fix one problem another arises.
The Misfire was fixed by changing the ignitor chip, I either wired it incorrectly or received a faulty ignitor chip. We found him a clutch fan as well as a water pump, an oil pump, timing chain tensioner... the current problem now is his transmission. He's in between buying a rebuild for his tranny or just buying a fairy lightly used sr tranny... suggestions?

Now as for my car... wow, what a journey it has been. I was not too happy with the paintjob but that was the least of my worries, I needed to get the engine started!

After having the car back in my possession the first thing I did was install my suspension parts. The next thing I worked on was getting the car started, i took it upon myself to attempt and wire the MAF sensor, and injectors... needless to say my electrical skills aren't worth shit so I didn’t have any luck even after taking it to SR motorcars… $650 later, I ended up taking it back to Mario to get everything working and he got it done for me. Car ran pretty good except for an overheating issue that I later found was my koyo radiator all along, even after swearing up and down it wasn't the radiator.
Got it fixed by a local welding company in Bellflower, CA

After getting it running I worked on getting a tune for it, I went to Road Race Engineering in Santa Fe Springs. After having the car tuned it ran great, felt like a completely different car. I was disappointed with my numbers but Sam told me their dyno gets lower numbers than similar model dynojets. I’m not sure the validity of the statement but that’s what I remember him telling me.

I decided to change the exhaust to a completely new unit, something discreet. I’m happy with what I got, but I would still like it to be a bit louder, however quiet is what I asked for so it’s what I got.

After the tune was complete I started to concentrate on getting everything for the body, my xenon front lip, side skirts and anything else I would want incorporated into the bodywork. I brought it to a good friend of mine to paint, took him about 4 days. The paintjob however is still incomplete, it needs to go back in for a color sand but I haven’t had a chance to be without my car for a day or so.

In the meanwhile this would be my transportation, trek 1.5.

I was extremely happy with the paint job, there are a few things it will need to look where I want it to be.
After I had enough cash to put down for tires and all of the accessories for the wheel, I made a move and got the tires mounted and speed balanced and put on the car. Had to wait an extra day to get a broken stem repaired for the wheels, came back the next day, ‘tested’ for tire rub, and with the help of OoAtreyuloO, rolled my fenders soon thereafter.

Everything went as planned... cept for a bit of paint bubbling? :nono:
No more rubbing afterwards, however I DO still get rubbing on the wheel well when hard cornering... time for tubs? :D that would be fun.

it’s very close to how I want it to look but there are still a lot of things I plan on doing, such as:
Repurchase Kouki taillights
Nissan Door lower weather stripping (Nissan oem $$$)
Origin / Supermade hatch top spoiler/maybe bottom as well
Nissan Window Rain Guards
Powder coating wheel faces
Suspension work:
Rebuild rack & pinion
Tein Inner & Outer tie rods
DiF Steering Bushing
Whiteline / Tanabe Sway Bars
Energy Suspension Bushings
Full subframe refinish: DiFsolid subframe bushings, ES arm bushings & black powdercoat.
Diff (vlsd or lsd) – I’d like to use the welded diff I already have from my last car but not for the street.
300ZX rear brakes
After these things are done, there won’t be much left for me to do but make the car faster and maintain it. This project has been a money pit, but well worth it. I’ll be sure to keep you all updated this year, I’m hoping very good things will become of the car this year.

These are the latest pics I have of the car, once I get the rest of my weather stripping and bodywork accents completed I will be sure to have another photo shoot and maybe even video ;)
