View Full Version : Help me identify these turbos

so i got these 2 turbos from a buddy. he said both were blown.
the first one has gt28 stamped on the tag of the compressor housing. it does not say "garrett" or any brand. it is in fact a dual ball bearing. the exhaust housing looks exactly the same as a T25. looks to be the same A/R as well.
the second turbo looks to be a T25. The compressor housing and center section are identical to a T25. The only difference is that it uses long journal bearings instead of short ones like most s13 T25's. The exhaust housing is huge. it is a 0.86A/R. the turbine wheel is much bigger then the standard T25. I have a feeling it is a non ball bearing T28 but the compressor housing is really small and looks identical to that of a regular T25.
here are some pictures:

that Gt28 used a really big waste gate actuator like this picture:

so help me out guys :)

You'll have more luck there.

that thread is way too general. it has everything from wheels to panties of a girl some guy attempted to "romance" the night before lol

ok just figured it out. the gt28 is a gt28r china turbo. maybe thats why the ball bearing failed on it lol
still need some info on the large housing garrett turbo.

the bottom one looks like its the came as mt t28 from tha pontiac grand am, or from a saab 9000 turbo wouold have to see the compressor to be exact though.

They all look like garbage to me, Neither is a Nissan OEM or Garrett turbo.
Throw them away

the bottom one looks exactly like a sr20 s13 turbo except for the size of the exhaust housing. same Garrett compressor housing and an authentic Garrett stamp on the center section as T25 i have.

quiet honestly i did not ask for your opinion. unless you have real life experience on turbo rebuilding or manufacturing your comment make a mute point.
the top turbo(gt28r) pictured is in fact a china turbo and the bearings are crap. i am scrapping everything from it except the compressor wheel and housing. my plan to machine the T25 center section so it will accept the GT28R compressor wheel. the exducer on the T25 is 55mm. on that GT28R it is a 60.9mm. im going to machine the CHRA to make it work. after that im going to rebuilt is with a 360* thrust bearing.
as far as not being Garrett....the second turbo is. authentic tag on the CHRA.
my plan is to make a non ball bearing GT28R with a big 0.86 A/R exhaust side.

did some more research and the 0.86A/R exhaust housing is from a pulsar GTI-R non ball bearing T28 turbo. sweet
now time for a GT28R/T28 hybrid with a 360* thrust bearing :)
already called Precision Turbo about getting it balance. they said yes and cheap too.

Actually you did. your thread says "Help me identify these turbos"
and i ID'd them as garbage.
And yes ive rebuilt quite a few turbos as well, Its not hard.

I can shit in a box and stamp a Garrett tag on it too, but that doesnt make it a real Garrett
Try Goggling YEQI guess what it come up as.... China, all that stuff are China turbo's. Even that last T25 exhaust housing, That is not a Nissan or Garrett Style housing due to that half assed WG flapper valve
This is an OEM T25 even the T28 is the same style as is the GT2871R

Well good luck with that Seriously

^^^^
1. do be a smart ass with "i ID'd them as garbage." you know full well what i was asking and there was no need for that comment.
2. shit all you want in a box it wont come out with a Garrett tag but if you can really do it then you might have a business opportunity ;)
3. i already found out, via search, that the first turbo is chinese. im only using the housing from it and the compressor wheel. aluminum casting is very hard to fuck up. the compressor wheel as well.
4. thanks for the good wishes :)
ill keep this updated. the diff in my sc300 took a shit. now i have to replace it in the garage and it 30* weather.
most likely tomorrow ill start machining this stuff.

Are you for realz? Casting is hard to mess up? This is a piece for air movement. Even though it is not a bottom end component there are still tolerances for the blades as well as casting quality which makes a huge difference in terms of performance....
Come on....

i know what you mean. casting quality and machining precision are two totally different hings. you can easily have the best materials in use and bad attention to detail while machining.
as far as casting of the housing, they are all extremely similar. no one uses any special alloys for them. it is not a load bearing piece. precision machining is the more important aspect here.
unless this piece was centrifugally cast, which it is not, it will have very little problems with porosity and strength.
let just put it this way. whether this was made from some cheap aluminum casting or a 6000 series aluminum it would perform the same with respect to materials.
do you think that i would just slap this thing together without checking all the clearances on ALL critical components. come on... ;)
i went to school for mechanical engineering and i know how to machine. i think i will be ok. if this works out im sure more people will be interested in this option.
btw the diff on my sc300 is replaced meaning the building of this turbo will begin tomorrow morning promply at 8am. updates coming soon.
i dont want this to be an argument thread. if you want to sidetrack and talk materials and engineering we can do it via PM or start a new thread in discussion forum.
i want this to be more informative of what i do and not an argument of peoples opinions. thanks guys.
