Falling asleep @ the wheel.

So, I'm sure you've heard stories of idiots falling asleep at the wheel. But lucky all of you... I AM one of the idiots.

So, I'm coming home from Santa Monica about an hr ago and long story short I'm awake all the way home completely fine. Then I get about 2 exits from my house when I find myself being awaken by my car hitting a wood sign and me taking the exit to see the damage... screwed up radiator, can't open my hood and THIS 240 was supposed to be sold this week. :duh:

Looks like most of it is just body panel damage. Frame is fine, my fender lights were even good!

Glad you're okay. I've fallen asleep at the wheel when I had my first car. Did 360 3x on the freeway after hitting the center divide and totalled the car. I had a jacked up back, neck and bruises. After that I just blast my radio and sing to keep me awake espeically on drives when I'm tired. Buddy system doesn't work to well if your buddy goes to sleep too. I speak from drives from San Francisco to San Diego.

I feel your pain, years back I fell asleep coming back from prom night, and totaled my gf's (now wife's) celica. We were all ok and no one was on the road, thank God. It sucks. No one trusts me anymore driving tired. haha. Always have a back-up when its late, a friend, food, drinks, ect. If your too tired ,even though your close to home, just pull over to knock out for a little. Better safe than sorry. Hope all goes well. Good Luck.

leave in the afternoon, hit the strip for a couple of hours and head back
~6hrs in either direction
had friends wake up on the side of the road or in ditches on a couple of occasions

I've fallen asleep about a few times, but I wake up right away after hitting the lane reflectors. It is a scary thought after realizing you have. One method that I use to keep me awake is rolling the windows down. The cold air and noise keeps me awake. Heck I've even stuck my face out the window for better results.

I drive a truck from LA - Salt Lake City UT, alot of the truckers turn the a/c or cold air on, roll a window down and if you get super super tired, pull over and get out the vehicle for 10-15 minutes(get the blood pumpin), or just take a nap man, not worth your life or the others on the roads life... Thats what I do or not I stop to get a NOS energy drink either grape or fruit punch in a can and not the plastic bottle. Only energy drink that actually works for me

WELL EVERYBODY, good news. And thank you to everyone who wished me good luck. Apparently I've found a shell that's ready to go. So, I'm buying that one sometime this week. If everything works out as planned. I currently have 3 S13's, 2 SR's, and more things to do than I have time to do them in!

The swap starts tomorrow,

I strip the interior from the wrecked car
I remove the welded diff
I remove the suspension
I remove the wheels
I remove the stereo
I remove engine

Everything but the engine should be done tomorrow, removing is much easier than installing of course.

and they'll be ready to put on the new shell I'm getting. As I said if all works out, I only lost a few hundred dollars on this accident, better than trying to get it fixed!

falling asleep @ the wheel sucks. its not as if you slowly fall asleep with droopy eyes & all... it just happens spontaneously & you dont knwo it until youre waking up from it. they say driving sleepy is worse than driving drunk. i agree with that. usually when im sleepy, i will pull over to take a nap, get coffee, stretch out, etc. well on one occasion, i was on my way to work after going out the night before, it was a 1.5hr drive. i got tired & pulled over to sleep but only had 10 minutes to spare. then i had to continute driving, i just could not be late. next thing i know, im waking up next to a guard rail. it sucked cuz on this section of road there was a very small shoulder=only a couple feet between road & guard rail=no space to react & correct. outcome:

i bought it w/ the $ i was gonna spend on rb25 swap, but semi wrecked the 240. well after wrecking the sc, i had to get that 240 back up in running. im glad i wrecked the car rather than hurting myself or others, or worse.

so guys, dont drive sleepy! the 'radio blast' & head out window dont really work. a magazine said that constantly changing the interior temp from hot to cold somewhat works. & its haaard to fall asleep when its cold. but hey DONT rely on that shit, dont rely on coffee either. if you can, pull over (into rest stop or parking lot in a safe area.) somewhere safe!! sometimes i would sleep @ a truck weigh station (which i think was actually illegal.) it might notve been the safest place, which is why i slept with my pistol hidden on my lap, which i agree the best thing. what if you wake up to a cop tappin on your window & you pull a gun on him.

a lil humor: sometimes when i would pull over and sleep, i would all of a sudden wake up and quickly grab the wheel because i thought i had fallen asleep. its funny cuz youre all looking around all panic-y and youre all scared. or sometimes you wake up and you dont even remember where the ef you are?

I used to drive from FL to Wisconsin every month or so, I always roll down the windows and smoke cigarettes, i also dont hessitate to take a nap in a rest stop. I used to drive it straight through (18 hrs) i have done it with out stopping but i normally stop and take a quick nap

I used to commute 35-50 miles on one trip just to go to school and I'll be tired by the time school is over so I'd be driving and dozing constantly.

Sometimes I would crash somewhere and try to nap so traffic dies down a bit and then head home, but it still doesn't work. I would be driving around 70 then wake up going 90-100 and hitting the lane markers. I just have a bad habit with that. It's scary to wake up to something right in front of you.

I even got pulled over once because the CHP thought I was driving drunk.
He told me sleeping on the wheel is just as bad as drunk driving.
Thankfully I haven't had any instances where I would hit anything *knock on wood*
My commute is now shorter since I am staying closer to campus.

If anybody ever feels tired take the closest exit and find somewhere safe to park and take a quick nap. Parking on the side of the freeway isn't the safest. Also emergency blinkers tend to attract tired and sleepy drivers so that's dangerous as well.

I used to fall asleep alot, not so much anymore.

Years back I almost took my 89 toyota pickup into the back of gt mustang on the 55 north going to School in ontario at 430 in the morning.
I woke up hitting the lane markers just in time to grab the wheel, and the mustang did not have one clue what happened.
Maybe he was sleeping too.

Its such a weird feeling, While driving it almost feels like a dream.
Or like youre on drugs.
like Xanax or something.

well.. before i was old enough to drive, my sister would fall asleep at the wheel and scaared the shit out of me sometimes.. so i would yell at her to wake up!! so i think if the the buddy system works somewhat

I used to have a problem with passing out on the road, back when my commute was 90 miles of lonely desert highway each way. In one case I almost rear ended a semi even though I could actually see it in front of me because I was so out of it. Singing along with System of a Down was rather helpful. Other times I'd have to stop and sleep for a while.

fell asleep hit a sign woke up looking at a tree swerved to miss went into median which was muddy front driver tire dug in and back of truck went over front of truck rolled like 3 times
