i'm having major problems starting my car. i just got a new battery because my old one was dying. now my car is cranking, but not starting. i took out my spark plugs and they were covered with gas. here are some pics:

the pics weren't taken right away, so the gas dried out. but there were covered with gas and you could smell it. i also checked the compression in all my cylinders, and it's fine (170 on all of them). so i'm not really sure what's wrong. any ideas?

www.pdm-racing.com has a whole breakdown of reading plugs somewhere in the tech help. It works well.

If it is dry and carbon-ish it's running rich (join the club!).

If it's oily you got problems. Head gasket probably went bad.

well u probably got gas on the plugs cuz you flooded the engine ? i dont know, did you try pumping the gas, that can flood it. Make sure that you are gettin spark, take out the plug wires put the plug in and fire it see if there is spark. also check distributor and all associated hardware, your timing could be off?

i definitely know that i'm running rich. when my car was running, i was getting plenty of black smoke from my exhaust. i can't really tell if it's oily because of all the gas on the plugs. since my compression seems fine, i don't think it's my headgasket.

yea, i've been pumping the gas to try to get it to start to no avail. i've checked every spark plug and plug wires. i'm getting spark in all 4 cylinders. it could be my timing, but i'm not really sure.

i've been getting a check engine light for my mafs. i'm not really sure what's wrong with it, because i got a new mafs and it didn't help matters. since the mafs regulates the amount of fuel going in, wouldn't that explain my running rich?

Check for the black (ground) wire and run it to the chassis or the engine. Or just pick up a new MAF from a junkyard if that doesn't work.

i've already picked up another MAF. after putting it on, however, my check engine is still on, and it didn't help matters either.
