I have an 85 AE86 coupe SR5. I got it out of a field and the whole car is as it sat in 1985. So I am looking to repaint it, I am going to paint it Gun metal grey. I was first going to take it to a paint and body shop to have them do it, but My friend has somewhat talked me into doing it myself using the Dupli-color Paint shop paint. Its a lacquer based paint and its meant to be really cheep and easy to use. I am just wondering if anyone of you guys/gals have used this product and whats your thoughts about it?

Do a search in the tech forum.
I believe it was covered before.
And if it was an SR5, then it is an AE85. AE86 is the GTS.
uh what?
"If you're in the United States, we never got the AE85. The Corolla SR5 is actually an AE86 (check the VIN number for the chassis code) that has a carburated 4AC engine. The AE85 in Japan is horribly weaker than the AE86 not only in engine, but also in a flimsy chassis built that way to make the 85 a cheaper car to manufacture and sell."
they were all 86's here broski.
there were just SR-5's and GTS on the same chassis.
To the OP I know that duplicolor works well to cover impoerfections but i have never used it for a whole car. If you follow the proper steps (prep, sanding, priming) I dont see why it wouldnt turn out fine. your also gonna wanna clear coat it which i suggest you have done professionally with a high quality clear.

Thanks WakeBHR thats some good advice to get the clear done by pros. thanks man
And I do have an AE86. The AE85 in Japan never had the 1.6L 4A motor but some other toyota 1.5L motor. My VIN does have AE86 in it but also some of the later kouki corollas had AE88 in their VIN. Both are AE86's

a friend of mine just did his car. and what he experinced was the primer doesnt cover for shit espicially around areas with filler. second the pigment in the basecoat was very good for being really cheap. and the clear needs to be sprayed heavy. he didnt and got some really dry area's. so i would say get a good epoxy primer. sand that down and go to town with the duplicolor. lol

Ive painted 3 cars with it and everytime the paint wont come out thick and smooth but if you sand good and get a thick clear its well worth the money. It just looks somewhat ruff as a finish

Yea I used the dupli color in red with the metal flake .. Paint came out pretty good but make sure you get extra extra clear lol mine is pretty dull. Gonna redo it sometime next month when I have time.
