Hello! I have a 1991 240sx fastback with Super Hicas and Viscous LSD. When I am reversing if I press on the brakes I get a loud clunk sound. At first I thought it may be because one calipers in the back wasn't working properly but it doesn't make the noise if I am reversing and I pull the E-Brake. Any ideas what this could be? I am now wondering if my LSD or something is broken. Has anyone else had this problem?
Thanks!
Kerissa

is it a clunking or a vibrating grinding sound?

mine was doing that!! it was the rear oem calipers wearing the pad unevenly since it doesn't have a firm enough grip with the single piston to wear the pad properly. when i took those pads off they were worn towards the top & towards the front, but not the rear of the car. the back of the pad had the most meat on it, so when i would back up it clunked 1st & then would vibrate if i didn't keep enuf pressure on the pedal. also, aftermarket (auto parts store brand) pads have a slight bit of slack to them so they shift back & forth in the caliper.
get some good brakes....REAL BRAKES!! or ur gonna keep having this problem

What? Stock rear brakes are very effective, and even better once upgraded to better pads, SS lines and better brake fluid.
Do you get the noise any other time? Possibly when accelerating out of the hole or over rough terrain? It sounds like it's bad subframe bushings to me. The ones that usually wear out first and create the noise you've mentioned are in the front of the subframe. Replace them all if you take it out.

I only get the sound when I am braking while reversing or if I am rolling backwards, never while going forwards. It is how dr.klawn is describing it. It makes a loud clunk sound and then vibrates. And unless I brake hard or use my E-Brake it will do it every time. I have replace the brake pads in the rear already and it has continued to do it. Should I get new brakes all together? Or should I check the bushings?

I had the same clunking sound when i swapped my welded for a VSLD. The first time i was backing up it started clunking, but stopped since then.

theres a common problems that if the rear pads are not installed correctly, it will make a clunking noise when u reverse

i had a similar issue once...one of the bolts from the caliper came loose and it was only being held by one bolt, so when i reversed the caliper was being pulled causing a clunking noise..got another bolt from the junkyard and to care of the issue

I checked my rear brakes and everything is wearing fine. Everything looks good in the rear, bushings included. I really don't know where the noise is coming from. I am really at loss. The LSD is stock and I have not done anything to cause the noise, atleast I don't think so. I wish I could remember when it started. Could suspension have cause stress somewhere?

have you checked to see if all the bolts on the driveshaft are tighten still?

the cars a 91, its most likely a hicas, so i doubt the LSD is swapped. Might also take into consideration some of the hicas parts being broken, and swaying around if its not anything above.
