liquid gasket vs solid gasket for oil pan?

I was thinking that you might not have to take pan completely off if you used a solid gasket? maybe cut it in one spot and silicone the cut area.

it wont work. you cant stuff liquid gasket on top of an already leaking area in hopes that it will seal.

Do it right the first time. drop the pan. remove all old gasket material and replace with a new one.

i used both, droped my motor in it still leaked...lol pulled the front of my oil pan down, and used an assload of rtv. and called it a day, no leaks now.

Well, i must say, if it has something to deal with the life of my motor, hell, i'll drop that oil pan every time to assure there is no leaks. Its not fun, but it'll save some money from burning a hole in your pocket.

I use a felpro gasket and gasket RTV
also torque bolts in sequence per FSM
I think this is one of the reason oil pan gasket always leak, people tend to over-torque those bolts.

use a gasket and rtv hasnt failed me yet...just take the time out and do it the right way...if u cut corners it will only bite u in the ass at the end..just giving u some friendly advice:hug:

You should never use rtv as a gasket, when you press then pan down it squishes and goes on both sides and beads up when it dries... i dont know about you but little beads of dried rtv is not what i want in my oil pan, you know where it goes from there

^^ prime example of how NOT to use RTV....you are supose to let it get firm B4 ur tighten it.
RTV is what NISSAN uses and recomends for most of the gaskets on MOST if not all of its motors. which is y a tube of nissan RTV is included in a master gasket set.

If you have a steady hand and can maintain the size of the bead you will not have any issues when tightened down, especially with "over-beading" issues

As said earlier, DO NOT WAIT FOR THE RTV TO HARDEN

Even at our dealership we all set the bead and torque the bolts down. Wait an hour or two depending on the customer's schedule and then pour oil in

I used an RTV from pepboys called "Hylomar" (i think) its blue and it worked with a felpro gasket no leaks, only downside was later on when i had to take the pan off it was almost impossible to get off

Some people don't know how to follow directions:

6. Assemble parts immediately while silicone is still wet.
7. Finger tighten flange only until material begins to seep
out the sides of the flange.
8. Allow to set for at least two hours and re-torque at
lease one quarter to one half turn.
9. For best results, allow to cure overnight.
