View Full Version : tranny issue?
hi i have a 95 s14. my transmission wont allow me to go into gear when its cold. after it warms up itll be fine. i would have to jam it in hard about 5 times before it goes in. also it grinds going into first gear and doesnt like going into reverse sometimes even when its warm.
what do you guys think it might be? low tranny fluid? syncros? help me please thank you

probably a combo of both, replacing the syncro is always a plus. Easiest would obviously, check the fluid and change if needed.

This is exactly what happens on a worn 240 trans, hard getting into reverse, doesn't like shifting cold, start to grind usually second gear at higher rpm. All very common worn trans stuff.

Well, you'll need a new or rebuilt trans, changing syncros isn't a DIY job, if you have to ask its probably not for you. I have read good things about Amsoil trans fluid, you can try an oil change it might get you by. Also make sure your clutch is fully disengaging, not as likely but it will cause the same problems if something is wrong with your clutch. Does your clutch pedal feel different after your car warms up? If so you might be bleeding out the air from a leak. Also the master cylinder can have an internal leak, which is a pain to figure out, clutch fork or pivot could be damaged. Most of the clutch stuff you can feel in the pedal itself, it wont have a firm feel to it, or it will engage the clutch hard as soon as your pedal leaves the floorboard.

rebuilding a trans isn't really as hard as most ppl make it out to be. as long as you take your time and label everything it shouldn't be a problem. transmission shops charge an arm and a leg. if you've never done it before get a digi camera and take pics as you take it apart and use that as a reference as to were everything goes.
