was getting ready to attach the SR to it's gearbox today (with plans of dropping it in the chassis tonight or tomorrow morning), when I realized the KA transmission I removed didn't have a dust cover! I've been informed that the SR one is too small; is it safe to go dust-cover-less?

Help! I want to get this thing dropped into the chassis ASAP so I can get wiring and piping done...

no, not that (I've got that and it's fine), I'm talking about the plastic hockey-puck-ish thing on the tail end of the transmission where the driveshaft slides in.

What? SR motor and tranny swap into a 240, right? So then why are you worrying about a KA tranny not having a housing?
I'm not understanding...
But no, it's not ok to go dustcover-less. The tranny hangs below the engine, and will turn into a scoop, and suck all sorts of crap up, and get into the clutch/flywheel, and cause damage.

Dust cover doesn't fit the KA driveshaft. You can either pull off the KA cover CAREFULLY or buy a new one. Either way it's a pain to put in. You'd probably need to press it in carefully. OR just buy a JDM driveshaft.

I'm following Heavy Throttle's Install FAQ and they say to take the dust cover (where the driveshaft meets the tail of the transmission) off of the KA gearbox, and put it on the SR gearbox. I cannot do this because the KA gearbox I removed did not have one to begin with, and probably hasn't had one for a while since the KA's gearbox was replaced 2 years ago.

A) I cannot pull the old one off carefully because it was not there to begin with, hence the point of the thread.
B) I am barely going to be able to afford the battery relocation and intercooler piping (until I get summer job going), so JDM driveshaft is out of the question.

Is this 100% necessary? The old KA gearbox evidently did fine without it, shouldn't the SR gearbox do fine as well?

No you don't need the cover. The gap between the tranny and shaft is ok, so you don't need to worry about it. There's no need to worry about a JDM shaft. Just worry about if all the sensors work, and timing, make sure all IC piping is tight and no leaks. Also prime the engine and blah blah.. :p Have FUN!!

alrighy then, engine can go in now :D (well... as soon as i break free the catalyst bolts and get the KA header out...)

how exactly do i prime the engine? I know you're supposed to do it where the turbo oil line connects back with the block, but do i just pour oil in there? what's the dealio?

I followed Phase2's instructions on priming. If you can get yourself some PB blaster, that stuff is great for loosening bolts and crap. Just don't inhale that stuff it's killer on the nose hairs :D

yeah I got some PB Blaster... good stuff for bolts. except I still couldn't break free the header/catalyst bolts. just cut all the exhaust hangers (cut the rubber crap b/c i couldn't get the nuts free either) and just pulled the whole freaking exhaust system out...

A burnz-o-matic is a nice addition to any project. used it many times while swapping my KA. Well most of it was to light my cigarettes.
