Go get your mind blown.

http://gatsome.com/images/avatar-movie-poster.jpg

To this point it holds the title of most visually spectacular movie I have ever seen. The story is pretty generic, but gets pretty epic.

Worth the $14, just make sure you see it somewhere with good sound.

Visuals good, but story not great?

To me that sounds like a bad movie then. Kinda like Transformers.

Much better than Transformers. It's not some cheesy piece of shit. I just mean it's the classic "Warrior finds love, has to help his new family instead of his old bastard army" type deal.

It was basically The Last Samurai with Aliens. Which is good for me.

Trust me though the 3D is unlike all the other 3D movies made to this point. Almost an entirely different experience.

Let's just say...

No big budget blockbuster will ever match up to it visually unless they use the same 3d tech.

Haha I mean in the level of interaction so until something else comes along, which it will. This takes the cake.

There is a speech in this movie that gave me and my girlfriend the chills.

The acting is on par with T2 :2f2f:, and there is enough comedy to keep things lighthearted when they need to be. Very well written in my opinion. Giovanni Ribisi is in it, so you know it's good.

I'd give it an A-

i'll probably try to see it in IMAX on sunday or monday, probably no way we'd get tickets tonight or tomorrow :/
do want, but i'm betting people are making too big a deal out of it.

edit: you know, i should probably stop being so skeptical. whenever i think of Cameron, i immediately go to Titanic, which sucks fat dong. but that dude did Terminator 2 and Aliens, which are both pretty balls-out.

A friend of mine watched some first 15 mins of this & said the same.
It's essentially the BEST special effects film to date.
It pushes the bar even further and sets a new benchmark.

Even if it's a terrible film,
good special effects is a worthwhile experience in itself imo.
this, I will have to see.

I'm just waiting to see an IMAX matinee when the crowds die down.

They made that too, but it looks really stupid.

Thinking back over my Last Samurai statement, it is almost EXACTLY the same movie but with killer special effects, 3D, pterodactlys, missiles, mechs.

Honestly, this is one of the greatest movies I have ever seen.

YES, it is a similiar story to Pocahontas and Dances with Wolves, but who fuckin cares. It's a completely different movie.

This movie blew me away from the very beginning. I thought the story was very good actually. The CG was so stunning. I'm actually shocked that the critics are saying the blue people didn't look real. They looked completely real.

I'm still in awe at this movie. I'd easily put it at one of my top 10 movies of all time. I can't wait to go see it again. Next time will be on the IMAX.

I feel bad for the people allowing others negative criticism downplay this movie int he least bit. You're truly doing yourself an injustice.

I'm still pissed at Cameron from the Titanic movie.....lol

I don't know, I'm not sold on it yet. And fuck you people for not liking transformers ;)

It looks great on the commercials, the acting looks like shit though, and I can probably guess what happens in the end.

I dunno, like I said, I'm not 100% sold on it.

Saw it here in SF 3D IMAX as well.

17 bucks with 2 dollar convenience D: (Bought online)

But it was worth it.

Thankfully I only went by myself (no date) and a couple of friends.

That would've been really expensive.

I would see it again if the chance arose.

IMAX isn't showing it here yet. still dicking around with Christmas Carol. so I saw it in 3d at the biggest screen it was playing on in the city, and wow.

this movie is visually stunning. not so much that it was very CREATIVE with the shots (some were amazing, most were standard adventure movie angles), but the CGI was absolutely the best any movie has ever had, like everyone has already said. the 3d really pulls you in and isn't distracting in any way, it's just there, and the movie benefits from it.

the story was solid. even though it's a story i've essentially heard before, it still pulled me in. the characters were developed nicely, but, being a James Cameron movie, it'd be hard to expect anything else.

overall, yeah, amazing movie. but the best scifi ever made? the Star Wars of our generation? what the fuck ever. this definitely isn't my favorite scifi movie (Blade Runner and THX 1138 hold that space) or even my favorite James Cameron movie (Aliens and Terminator/T2 hold that one). hell, this isn't even my favorite cgi mindfuck movie (seriously, if you missed Speed Racer in IMAX, you missed the eyefucking of a lifetime).

i feel like because the promotional material underhyped it, people who saw it and had their faces blown off feel the need to overhype it. not really anyone in this thread, but the general population seems to act like it's the second coming of Christ, but it's just some sick graphics that are going to feel pretty dated when we look back on it in 20 years. Tron comes to mind.

but yeah, DEFINITELY worth the extra two bucks for glasses, and i'll be seeing it again when it's in IMAX here, maybe a couple of times. awesome movie, highly recommended.

It grossed $232.18 million internationally this weekend. Which is crazy considering most of it's revenues came from 3D which isn't available everywhere and carries the ticket premium.

Cameron made it with his "fuck you money" and I guess it's paying off.

saw it at Tivoli, they've got it on the main screen. we were going to drive out to Fenton to see it at Great Escape but i didn't feel like it.
actually, it might be playing on Esquire's main screen, which i think is actually the biggest in city limits.
if i were seeing it in the county, though... fuck ronnies, dude. check out Great Escape, they've got leather rocking chairs and they kick people out for using their phones.
and of course, Chesterfield Galaxy might have it on the Mega Screen, but Wehrenberg's site is down so i don't know.

This movie was amazing! They really outdid themselves with the 3D thing, it's so well integrated into the movie and not cheesy. It also gave me a better sense of immersion. Kinda feels like you are there, and I can safely say there wasn't a minute where I was bored or thinking about something other than the movie.

Story is predictable, and so are the characters, but to me this is such a technological feat that it didn't matter. Felt so connected to the characters for some reason.

I'd say it's the best movie I've seen this year.

Like somebody said before, I have never seen a movie at the theater more than once. I will be going back to watch this again. Don't listen to the media dumbfuckery. Secret messages my ass. GREAT movie, GREAT use of 3d.

I didn't want to see this movie from the previews. A couple of friends and I just decided to go on a whim. Three hours later, budda bing, mindfucked.

People cry on and on about the film's generic plot. Well, I read a good point recently about how people predicted Titanic would tank because everybody knew how that one ends. Cameron changed peoples perceptions by creating one hell of a ride to the inevitable end. I think he did a lot of the same with Avatar.

watched this yesterday, but not the 3d version. (i know, with a movie production like this, it should only be experienced in 3d because watching it in regular version is like experiencing a fucked up "arcade to console" port for the first time. aka. xmen vs street fighter on ps1 w/ no tag teaming)

it was a pretty good movie, but the hype made it seem it should have been better. i guess new creatures and a different world was interesting, but like others have said, the plot is a recycled "the last samurai" type. still a good movie non-the-less.

i was expecting the navi people to have more fight in them or as least not die as easily. the colonel said in the beginning they have "toxins that will kill you in a minute and naturally reoccuring carbon fiber reinforced skeleton" and are "very hard to kill" but they gone down easily to bullets. they should have at least been better at melee combat and resist more bullets before going down. even kazamoto in the last samarai got stabbed numerous times before he died.

Lol @ the Pocahontas parallel... I don't really think James Cameron intended for this to come across as an original story, but rather as a story that reoccurs over and over again throughout human history. And that is the story of the apparent human need to usurp the land of indigenous peoples and demean/subjugate them in the process.

It's one of those things that you hope if you tell the story again, maybe you can help prevent it from happening again.

I'm one of those people that has a pretty solid sense of a movie from the trailers/previews. I had low expectations for it because I'm never really blown away by special effects. I'm more about the story.

This surprised me. It was really, really good.

Obviously not an original story. Like someone said, it's a story that reoccurs throughout time.

Yes it was long, but it didn't feel it.

I was also told to see it high... which I didn't. But I can imagine it would be that much more mind blowing.

i found the story to be kinda played out and it was too long

I saw it Friday night and feel the only good thing about the movie was the new visual technology. Other than that, the story was a rip-off past movies (The Last Samurai, Dances with Wolves). The last fight scene was extremely dissapointing. It was way too Hollywood and was not necessary IMO. The script started weird also. I takes the viewer about 20 mins to figure out what is going on and why the narrative sounded so weird and poorly produced.

Overall, 7.8 out of 10. Worth seeing for the visual effects, but not a ground breaking blockbuster.

Also, I did not see it in 3D and I think the movie would have been much better if it were rated R :)

After 4 weeks, Avatar is now at $429M. It will be interesting to see if it catches Batman: The Dark Knight at $533M or even Titanic at $600M.

why the hell was Titanic such a big deal? shit was #1 for almost four months, and it wasn't that great of a movie. was it just because it had cgi Titanic floating around and people still have boners for Titanic stories?

True. The main character's first dragon was green like paul walker's eclipse and later he got a big fuckin orange dragon just like the orange supra.... :eek3:

... Too bad in Avatar, the green dragon didn't blow the welds on its intake manifold..

Fast and Furious takes a lot of heat for that line.

However, anybody who's owned an eclipse will see the realism.

Those fuckers will do anything not to run right.

There are stories on news websites right now about how Avatar is being called racist.

haha. I can somewhat relate. I own and Evo and this bastard is doing its damn best to fuck my life up. It's gotten to the point where I said "fuck it" and bought an integra to drive around since I can't count on the Evo.

Of course it's racist. It's the Human race against the Na'vi race. And we can all tell that the Na'vi bear resemblences to and represent the indigenous peoples of Africa and the Americas who were subjugated by the Europeans.

But the word 'racist' doesn't have to be bad or negative in this context. After all, the indigenious people won this time. This is the reason I am able to forgive this movie's simple plot... because hopefully it will get people thinking about America's role in the past through the eyes of others and hopefully it will make us all more considerate of others as we plot America's course for the future. I loved the themes in this movie.

I also loved how Neytiri defended the shit out of her man. Nothing like a good woman!

As the driving force behind the European/Western subjugation of indigenous peoples... Fuck whatever the Vatican is talking about.

Yeah I know , I know this is an old thread, but I thought this shit was old news from the start, and did not know how there were lines al the way out to the parking garage at irvine spectrum for weeks, and weeks.

But this was sent to me yesterday and made me laugh and wanted to share, and this is the only place fitting.

Yes other movies remind you of other movies, but this is almost the SAME movie. Not very original but visually stunning.

Finally saw this in 3D today.

The story was a bit cheesy,
but you don't go see a film like this for something socially profound,
or in-depth character development.

it delivered well on visual special effects & design.
I was particularly impressed with the realism of the cgi facial expressions.
sound effects are fairly decent.
cinematography was competent but nothing outstanding or innovative.

About the acting & char development,
yes it wasn't great, but not terrible either.
Sam Worthington (did a much better job than Christian Bale in Terminator Salvation imo) is not a bad actor.
It could have been much, much better if more emphasis was taken with the main character's transformation.

Both sides were terribly 1-dimensional either good or evil.
honestly I didn't feel it was as bad some of you guys mentioned.
as an action flick it was much more enjoyable than some of last years' say Wolverine, GI Joe, Terminator, Star Trek, & Transformers.
I didn't think it was much worse than say 'District 9'.

To me, the generic Pocohontas plot is indeed played out, no question.
But then again so is just about 90% of Hollywood films that have conventionally relied on plot formulas.
I can appreciate a well made Hollywood film.
It does well for what it is.

I'd give it a B+

Thank you. Totally agree. I think it's retarded for people to go to this movie expecting Shawshank Redemption.

Oh and this is like the 6th week it's been #1.
