hey everyone this sounds like a newb question and i feel dumb askin but i just need someones ideas to try, my sr wont even attempt to turn over when it gets below freezing , key in the ignition i hear everything turn on and turn the key and nothin,,
im thinkin i just need a new starter but lmk what you think ,

It doesn't turn over, or it doesn't do ANYTHING?

If it's not turning over, it could be a weak starter that can't overcome the viscosity of the oil when it's cold.

Cold also be poor vaporization of fuel upon startup, but if you are on stock ECU, it should have cold start enricment programmed in, I believe.

Hmmm trying to think how that would be related to cold weather....

Frozen interlock relay.

Try weatherizing it.

just more of a reason to hate the cold...:bash:

not even clicking...
get the starter tested, if it still works i'd start lookin to oil warmer install. if not, there ya go, new starter. ...or does it work when it's warm?

if this has something to do directly with the cold... i'm intrigued... sorry i can't offer too great of advice on it tho.

Bypass the blue clutch interlock relay. Search for posts by me with the word interlock and it should get you the writeup.

it's cause of the low center of gravity. raise the ride height, use big knobby tires, and then try with a little more velocity. :D

seriously though, it's either that blue relay or the solenoid. i just had to replace the solenoid on my sr car.

Well, it "could be" the interlock relay.

You should check to see if it is working first, but I would figure its probably the easiest to freeze because of its location in the fender and construction.

yeah bypass that relay. If no luck You said it's only when it's cold so I assume it's more battery related.

At 5 degrees a fully charged battery has only half its rated amperage capacity.

Your starter solenoid needs approx 150 amps to move the plunger switch mechanism on your starter.

The next time you're going back inside, bring your battery with you and let it stay at room temperature. Bring it out in the morning and see what happens.

I suggest a battery with a higher cold cranking amperage rating. They have all kinds of heaters and battery blankets but I don't know how good those really are. Although a oil pan heater is always nice to have if you live in North Dakota.

You can always check your interlock relay simply by running jumper wires to it from a battery and hearing for it to click.

Im gonna say that you should test that interlock relay. If that is not it then it could be you battery freezing. Id listen to dubtastic and take it in with you before you go to sleep. Next morning if the car starts then it probably was the water in your battery freezing.

The bendix in your starter might be bad, i have heard of those going out from time to time. if your feelin' frisky, i'd take it to an starter and alternator shop, they can disassemble and rebuild (if necessary), but i wouldnt buy a new starter right off the bat, see about getting it tested and let us know what they say. most common auto stores have a testing station.
