So upon purchaseing a 1993 240sx coupe 5 speed. "great body btw , interior needs some loving and it doesnt run" on to the story.
Pull the valve cover etc etc get to the cams ...the exhaust cam is broken in two. But the cam journals do not have any scratchs or looks of engraveings or anything. Should i just replace the cams and start her up? or is there probably valve and or piston head damage? Just want some feedback from guys that have dealt with these motors. Im a vg30de person myself...*bullet proof*
thanks
The valves may have hit the pistons, they might not have if you're lucky... it depends where the cam stopped rotating. Pull the pieces of the cam out and see if the valves close all the way (tops of the valves are even height). If it looks alright, put a cam in and try to fire it up.
Worst case you can find a complete motor for $100-200 and they aren't too hard to swap.

it's unusual for the cam to break during operation. unless maybe it was oil starved. they probably tried to do a cam swap and broke the cam during installation. that is when they are most likely to break. they'll get uneven pressure applied along the length of the shaft.

When i pulled the cam the valves were all , all the way down. And i pulled them it looked to be in decent condition. Worst case scenario i guess id have to buy another motor. But down here i cant find any or id just do that in the first place to be safe.
If someone with more knowledge could email me i have pictures of the cam journals and top of valves etc. You may be able to notice something i did not.

^so you are saying when you pulled the cams out the valves were all open? IE, no retainers holding them up? springs? Whats going on exactly?
