down here in california, radar detectors are illegal.. dont know about your state... but if you want a really good one, get the V1(valentine 1) http://www.valentine1.com/

supposed to be the best one on the market... i have it nothing special.. the thing i like about it is it tells the direction from where the radar is coming from...

some people say it gives them false alarms.. hasnt happened to me yet..
do a search there a thread i read a while back all about detectors...

i got a PNI detector for 100 canadian

it was a great unit, long range detection of all laser and radar, VG2 invisible if these are illegal where you live, and I know it works believe me

great unit, i wouldnt pay more for anything else

now the cops have it, he saw iton my dash when i was at a light..

new ones in the mail

go to www.wosmile.com and look it up

I highly reccomend the escort8500!!! It has NEVER failed me...I have seen it pick up radar from over a 1 1/2 mi away through the rain. I know a valentine is VERY VERY GOOD! My friend has one and ive seen it perform great but since I have the 8500 that is what I can attest to...I would have gladly payed more for it than what I did...look on ebay for what ever you choose for a better deal than 400bucks ;)

your all from the states right? And detectors arent illegal there am i correct? See personally I wouldnt spend lots on one since if a cop sees or detects it you get a fine and it gets taken away

but the pni was good, in fact check out

www.speedzones.com

for test results

The PNI performed within a few percent as well as any other unit 3 or 4 times the price, in some cases better i believe. It was my first one and the new one is in the mail. Great piece!

Since when are radar detectors illegal in CA? Theyre legal.

Hmm, interesting. Guess theyre illegal then. I've always heard the opposite; that detectors are pefectly legal but jammers are illegal. Either way, you shouldnt have any of that stuff sitting out in sight of an officer if they pull you over ;)

yes NZO

an honest mistake though, i hadnt had it a week yet and hadnt learned that they are pretty much useless within the city so it was right there on my dash and an ummarked car drove up beside me...

175 dollar fine here for that.

For jamming, there are a few low price ($150 or less) radar detectors that can be turned into jammers/detectors. There are a few sites that tell you which ones will work and how to do it. I was thinking about doing it, but I am not too good at soldering and making sh*t work. I am better at breaking sh*t.

yeah, i too tend to break more stuff than i make.

but thanks for all the recommendations, matt

breaking stuff is the best... like when you pull something apart all confidently...then you put it back together and never works right after that.. ever happen to you guys? hehe anyways, what sucks is that a radar has to be mounted where the laser can shoot out of the car in all the directions, in other words, it has to sit up where your dash is or your windshield.. that sucks... they should make one that you can have like at least on the steering wheel hub cover thingy..

yeah..i break things too. This one time (not at band camp) I installed fog lights on my old Isuzu and it took like...3 hours and then when I turned them on the wiring caught fire.

"Radar detectors are banned in all vehicles in Virginia and the District of Columbia and in big trucks in New York and Illinois. However, they are allowed in noncommercial vehicles in the other 49 states besides Virginia. State legislatures for the most part have been unwilling to ban detectors. According to the Radio Association Defending Airwave Rights (RADAR), more than 110 attempts to ban radar detectors in 33 states have been defeated in recent years."

check this out, I was looking at radar detectors when I used to get pulled over alot going about 20 over all the time.

Its a radar jammer! now that would be fun.

I found a much cheaper alternative though, DON'T SPEED! seriously, once I got alot of points on my licence I found out that I didnt really need to speed as often as I did, you can still make driving fun.

i had my valentine for a couple weeks now and love it, even on back roads when cops use pulse radar on a car way ahead it picks it up great

the best thing with the valentine is the concealment, especially being in a state where they are illegal

they give you a hard wire kit and mine is run through my a pillar through my visor to the unit above the mirror, the plug is not your average adapter, it uses the same plug as a telephone jack,

so i went to radio shack got a money car cell phone speaker, any time in the future, i unplug the detector slip under my shift boot and plug in the speaker

in states that are illegal they are legal if they are away from a power source, also beings that my a/f gauge is where my cigarete lighter was, its kinda hard to tell i ever had ne thing there

thats a good idea puttin it under the shift boot...

thing is where I live theyre really cracking down and they have the right to tear your car apart if they want to, at your expense. Ive heard horror stories of people having seats slitted open, and the police even using a crowbar to pry the dash apart from the firewall, and smashing the windsheild out before doing that for access.

maybe in a drug arrest... but for a radar detector? Nobody would stand for those gestapo tactics.

Yea seriously guys, you aren't living in a totalitarian regime here, they don't do that stuff for no reason. Not to mention y'all seem to be missing the fact that the only state where detectors are illegal is Virginia.

its only a $30 dollar ticket in va no points and they give it back after a certain time

i really have no need for a detector on most occasions, i work like 2 miles from my house, and traffic keeps the speed well below the limit

however, my boy lives in boston and i go up for the weekend quite often, usually after i get out of work on a friday night, late when there are almost no cars on the road. and i just want to fly. i just wanted to hear what other people would reccomend. thanks, matt
