So I've been driving my 1996 240sx for like 6 months without registration because the CEL was on, and I'm getting pretty desperate to register it. I just recently Fixed the problem and got the light off but i still don't want to smog it yet. The reason is because it has a pending code stored in its memory. My question is will a pending code cause you to fail a California smog inspection even if the CEL is not illuminated. Also if anyone could tell me the enabling criteria to run the evap system monitor, more specifically how full the tank must be, that would be great too.

Do you mean the Monitors haven't cleared yet or is there another code?

Hey whats up man i am a ca smog tech..as for pending codes u have to run the car threw 40 cycles (key on engine on) basically the car is to run 40 times with the code being off to get rid of the pending code.. also have the evap moniters to set off leave the car out in the sun with around 3/4 tank of gas but no lower then a half tank and the car its self should run its own test since its a obd2 car the evap moniter is the hardest moniter to set just because evap test runs at different time in all cars..pm if u have anymore questions

Well all the monitors ran, and the evap monitor sets another new code and mil, so i dont want it to run. I know i can pass he smog inspection without running the evap monitor. Im just worried that the pending code because it doesnt set a MIL. Will a pending code still make me fail?

I forgot exactly which p0... code, but it is a knock sensor circuit fault. No check engine light.

Update: I took my car to a shop today and it passed smog. I asked the smog tech and he said that as long as the check engine light is off and all the monitors ran it should pass the obd2 smog test. It does not matter if there are any stored codes, as long as the check engine light is off. The only reason Im posting this is so future questions can be answered with a search, and not a new thread. Thanks to all who helped.
