For those of you that are into the 2 wheel world, his name is Valentino "The Doctor" Rossi.
For those of you that don't know, he's the reigning champ in Moto GP(Premiere Class). He still utilizes the drifting technique to set up for corners and passing even now.

I think truly that, drifting is only for fun...
People who think drifting is faster because of Initial D ...
Go track first then go drift.....you WILL tell the difference.

IMO it depends on turn, but drifting is generally used for show.
In GT3, yadayada I know its a game but its pretty realistic, I have been able to drift in some turns faster than I was able to use grip.
It all depends on drift style, turn, the driver, the car, the settings.
Grip probably has an advantage in most situations though.

he don't even look like a professional driver for the way he was going through those curves.
UGH! That's not Valentino Rossi. He's wearing a Suomy helmet and Gilera leathers. Valentino has been sponsored by AGV and Dainese for just about all his career. And that guy is WAAAY too sloppy to be Vale.
Check this thread for Vale, including a vid of him sliding the RC211V and why drifting a bike is faster (though not necessarily a car):

theres a video (im not sure if it was option or best motoring) where Keiichi Tsuchiya took his AE86 around the track. a grip lap, and a drift lap. grip was faster by far.

The clip was from his club racing days, back when the dude was just a kid. Not sponsored yet, in case y'all don't know. As for grip and drift, either one on its own will not be the fastest way around. The combination of both, or some like to refer to the drift part as powersliding. I'll leave that to discussion. Pure drift or pure grip will not be the fastest way, the 2 has to go hand in hand. I've done both, and to know how to grip... One has to know how to drift to know the limit, and vice versa... To drift, one has to know how to grip. One who've experienced both will know what I am talking about. Anyone arguing one is fast than the other has either not get the essence of neither or has not tried either/both. As for the Keiichi vid, he did PURE drift lap and PURE grip lap. True, the drift lap was slower than grip lap. However, pending track layout, the result might differ. Aite, that's it, open disscussion~
