Nissan’s forthcoming Qazana baby SUV is a polarising design that generates “love or hate” reactions, according to company insiders.
Sources say the production version of the Qazana, due on sale in October 2010, is the beginning of new design era for Nissan.
“The Nissan brand is going to have a more attractive and emotional appeal in the future,” said one insider, “and the Qazana will start the process.”
The production car is said to retain the exaggerated proportions and much of the interior of the concept shown at this year’s Geneva show. But the source denied that the Qazana is a risky move.
“We have studied the market and customers extremely closely and are sure that it
will be a success,” he said.
Nissan is keen to expand into Europe’s booming crossover market following the success of the Qashqai; it sold 183,294 examples last year.
The Qazana is based on the same platform as the Nissan Note. It is scheduled to be built at Nissan’s Sunderland plant, replacing the Micra supermini’s production line there.
The Sunderland plant has just announced plans to train up to 1000 unemployed people in anticipation of new jobs being created next year.
The plant will also become one of two European centres for battery production. It is hoping to produce the electric Leaf hatchback from 2011.

So now that we have the info and pics out of the way, what do you think as far as design? Ignore the fact that the vehicle itself is a CUV and just look at the details.
The headlights are very small and are placed high up on the hood. The placement seems a bit odd right now, but I recall just 10 years ago feeling the same way about vertical headlights in general.
The grill is relatively the same shape just more flowing and flanked by two large fog lights. In this deign though are they the actual headlights? Kinda looks like it to me.
What is noticeably absent from the headlight design is the "fishhook" shape. That didn't last long huh?
The tail lights are just a more exaggerated version of the fishhook design but the exaggeration actually make the shape work now. It doesn't look as forced as it does now on cars like the 370z. It's actually more of a boomerang shape.
The greenhouse is sticking with the Nissan's current design like we see on the GTR, 370z, etc which is perfectly fine with me as I'm a fan of that shape.
The wide fenders also seem to be a standout element. Notice the black around the fender. They used this same element in the Urge concept years back but in a sports car setting.
Also notice the windshield is an oval.
Over-all I don't mind any of the elements. Like the article said though it's either love it or hate it. It's too early to tell how these cues will relate to the sports cars and sedans, buy I'm sure we'll see something in the not so distant future.

Can't say I like it
the rear isn't too bad but the front is horrible
but then again I hardly ever like any 'new' designs
I hated the last gen Celica when it came out just as I dislike the majority of the econoboxes
but seeing them on the road all the time I get used to them

I read that the move towards electric power eliminates drivetrain noise, but the NHV from wind noise and road noise becomes more prominent. Nissan designs the frontal profile to divert wind around the vehicle instead of on top of the vehicle to reduce wind noise.
The green people have been complaining about wind noise that was previously drowned out by drivetrain noise.
That's why the cars look the way they do.

And since Nissan has announced they plan to be the world wide leader in electric vehicles it makes sense that a lot of their cars will have that design.

From the side the tail lights look good. But from the rear it's hardly even a hook shape. Looks more of a 90 degree angle to me.
Even on the Veyron I don't think square center exhausts work either.
The car itself doesn't look terrible, and it's not at all offensive to look at. It will be interesting to see what they change and keep when in production though.
And although I wouldn't buy it myself, who knows what the general public would think.
I guess that's why i'm not getting paid a 6 figure salary to tell a car company what will and wont work though =p

I can see the bodystyle working out.
But the front end needs work. The headlight high on the fender = RETARDED. The big bug-eyes would work better as primary headlamps though. I digg the feel of the front fascia.
I feel the rear lights should be a bit more squared, but still retain a fluid feel.
Overall, 7/10.
OTopic, but I wished they stuck with the Z concept for the 350z. It looked so much more heritage than the current bullshit. Fuckclusterdick.

Like the rear a lot.
The front is risky, but functional.
I wouldn't buy something like that, but then again I would never buy an suv.
it actually reminds me of one of the prior gen Muranos.
If it is the actual production model like the article says, then I'm really impressed.
I think this is a good direction.
Nissan has been far too conservative as of late.
Many Nissan/Infiniti sedan models look so similar, if not somewhat generic.
I respect a company willing to take chances.
Will be interesting to see what treatment they have for their other cars.

i think we should look past the qazana itself and look that the styling cues.
swoopy, organic shapes, aggressive fender flaring, very smooth shape overall. if you replaced those headlights with the one off the murano (which it very may well end up getting), the qazana is pretty attractive. imagine this language being applied to a small, low slung, rear wheel drive coupe, and half of you guys would be all up in it's exhaust pipe. i'm looking forward to it, nissan's current design style is getting pretty played, so it'll be a change for the better.

It just looks soulless to me. I like cars that look like they have faces.
Although at second glance, I guess it looks like a frowning dog. I just think it looks like a mess. It feels to me like automakers are trying so hard to do something that hasn't been done before that they are throwing wacky shit out there.

I like most all the elements. The head lights are really the only thing I don't like. Maybe if you put the head lights down low with the driving\running lights up high.
I will say that the proportions of the vehicle are wrong for me but not too off putting. There are definitely uglier cars in production now.

Good goodness. The back is cool with me just a bit too exaggerated. I prefer the boomerangs on the maxima and 370z much more than this "fishhook" design. I like the current styling Nissan is doing, (minus the g37 coupe) and I am wary of it being more exaggerated.

Everyone on this forum would make up less than 1% of the US automobile market. I don't blame Nissan or any manufacturer for trying to cater to the market.
If you don't like the front end, maybe you can come up with a more aerodynamic front end that is more cosmetically pleasing.

Technically they are all Nissans. :keke:
I thought the Maxima and 370Z were reflections of the new Nissan language.
The more I see both of those cars, the more I like them.
As for Infiniti, it's a wait and see for the refreshed G and new M. So far I've seen the front end of the Infiniti G, but I'm patiently waiting to see the rear styling.
BTW...here is the refreshed Infiniti G....

Technically, but the design language is different between the two lines.
I LOVE Infiniti's new designs. The G is soooo damn sexy to me. Makes the 3 Series look like an old turd.
LOVE IT! though it would probably look better as a car. Nissan needs to bring more wagons to the US not the SUV's. though the SUV and new Micro SUV's will probably sell more.

I like we're they're going with it and from the description provided from the insider I think some exciting designs are up ahead. That said, I don't like the fog lights..I think they should do something else with them and is it me or does it look like it will have some blind spots.

I hope it comes out like that though.. ballsy design.. hope they keep it up.. it will make everything look dated instead of how a 2000 car looks mostly like a 2009 car..

And here's a teaser of the vehicle in production form. Again Nissan able to stick very close to the concept vehicle design. It seems like everything has carried over. I'm interested to see how they implement this style of headlight into cars like the Altima and maybe a SX/Siliva.
