View Full Version : S14 Black Top Worth The Extra Money?

Im sure this topic has been beaten to death, but I searched the FAQ thread and came up no luck. I also searched the general forums and no luck on that.
I understand the differences between the S13 Redtop S13 Blacktop S14 Blacktop. Basically you get a variable valve timing and better turbo for with the S14 blacktop. However I have been told (not sure if this is true) that the S13 Redtop is better if your going to build the motor and go with aftermarket turbo. Something about longer runners or something.
If there is a thread on this can someone kindly point me to it? if not any help would be great!
Sorry for the noob post.

IMO i would go with a redtop dont have to mess with the vvtc thingy(i think thats what it is lol) i have seen alot of people that have it, it gets noisy and it really does nothing performance wise imo... only benefit of the s14 black top is lower mileage, and the turbo... someone please correct me if i am wrong...

I would avoid S14 for the VTC issue. Just about every S14 SR I've seen has the rattle, and eventually they have to fix it or remove VTC completely.
For a stock buildup, I would go with blacktop S13 SR since they're newer.
For a complete rebuild, you can go with an older redtop S13 SR.

As far as the s14 VVT rattle, all you have to do is replace the camshaft. Tomie makes camshafts for the s14 SR. Ppl are ganna tell you all the same, if your ganna build it, its "easier" to go red top, but if your looking at around 300-350hp, the s14 sr can make it easy ontop of having a lil more rev happyness with the VVT.I also want the s14 SR just because i have an s14, and to me it looks better in the bay. But im funny with putting motors in the right cars.

Then why are you getting rid of the KA? That motor is in the right car..
I think the long runner thing you're talking about is the low port of the S13 and the high port of the S14..

There are merits to the S14 SR though. If you're running the stock engine management, the wiring is fully documented in the S14 SR FSM.
On the S13 you have to learn from experience or rely on other people's experience and translation from Japanese.
If you're going to run a full standalone then the VTC may or may not help. This is something you want to talk to your engine builder and tuner about.

You have it backwards. S13s have high-port heads which flow better than S14 low-port heads. This is why they are better for full engine builds.

If you're looking to install a relatively stock motor and want to make ~250-300whp then I would personally choose a S14 SR.
You get a bigger turbo, a better oil pick up (then a red top), a much easier to access group of intake manifold sensors, a better designed valve cover, a better designed water neck/turbo line set up, and it definitely looks cooler, haha.

It really just depends on what you plan on doing. If you arent going to completely re-build the motor, etc. I would pay the extra money just so I can have a newer motor for peace of mind.

You know what i meant, as far as making a USDM s14 silvia. Also meaning NISSAN motor into a NISSAN vehicle refering to ppl putting 1jz 2jz ls1's in our cars. Its cool, just not my thang. MHO tho
So keep your KA army's to yourselfs stay on topic

FYI, GMAC owns Nissan stocks (NSANY). So GM, Fuji Heavy Industry (Subaru), Saab, and Nissan are all the same company.
Since Toyota and Subaru are partners, that makes Toyota also part of Nissan.
I don't know if you know anything about trademarks, but "Nissan" just refers to the source, not the product. Anything sold by this big group of company is considered to be a "Nissan" product.
I can put a Nissan sticker on my Chevy small block and still be okay because Nissan would be suing themselves otherwise.

Sorry bro, but you are completely wrong. I have a blacktop S14SR in my Kouki. The S14s have the high port head, which is why the intake manifold places the the throttle body about even with the valve cover. I have driven the S13 and S14 motors in different cars and it really is a night and day difference. The S14 is smoother, feels alot torquier, and with the T28, it pulls alot harder. All of these characteristics made me buy the S14SR

for the price difference of around 300 dollars, I would grab a s14sr haha
My opinoin as to why people say to grab a s13 sr for building up is its a cheaper base motor to start with and you can put the extra money saved into something else. grab the motor you want dude, and build it to your standard :)

Yea I would say go with the s14 sr. I couldn't be happier with my s14 sr. Just got it tuned with aem ems and 550's and it made 300whp and 300 ft/lbs with a super smooth power band. No motor work done at alll and stock turbo. Its so responsive its disgusting haha.

Go with the S13 motor.
I have tuned soo many. And the lack of VTC is such a blessing once you start to go over 350 or so whp goals and if you want to get the best out of your turbos, especially the larger GT28 variants

You sir, have no idea what you're talking about. Let me demonstrate:
High-port S13 motor:

Low-port S14 motor:

See the difference in the angle of the ports? That's what makes the S13 head flow better.
And if you don't believe me, here's a link to the Mazworx thread. I'm pretty sure they know SR20's more than any of us.

I was reading up between the high-port head vs the low-port head in the fwd sr20 and found some interesing results
BenFenner's 1994 Black SE-R - Page 16 - SR20 Community Forum - The Dash (http://www.sr20-forum.com/members-rides/554-benfenners-1994-black-se-r-16.html#post228821)
High port heads DO NOT flow more than low port heads. Those flow numbers posted are about correct. A Low port head flows about 240cfm IN @ .500" while a high port is 185-195 @ .500"
The low port exhaust varries from 170-175cfm @ .500" on a DE head, a DET is about 150 cfm.
Stock Highport head only flows about 205cfm @ .500"
Stock Lowport head flows around 245 @ .500"
Does any have flow results on the s13 sr20 vs s14 sr20.
Latez.
