View Full Version : 96 S14 - Pulley noise
Today I went and looked at this old ladies 96 240sx and it's in great condition except for this squealing noise coming from a pulley that I have pointed to in that picture below(not the same car as I looked at today, just using pic to show) My thoughts are that it's just a loose pulley, I checked the belt and it seemed firm but I couldn't move the pulley with my finger. I might still buy this car if anyone hear can tell me a little more about this problem.

did you check the underside of the belt for wear? The belt should turn about a quarter turn any more or less the tension is off, Go up to the pulleys and pull on them a bit back and forth if they are moving excessively they just need to be tightened, check them also for wear chips abnormal wear all you might need to do is tighten or loosen the belt... good luck

is that what the pulley operates? if it is then is it difficult to replace them? to me it looked pretty easy to access that area but I came here because you guys know a lot more about these cars than I do.
and yes I did check the belt and the condition of the pulley itself and they seemed good to me. I've been reading some other threads and I started to see some that talk about spun bearings so it might be bad bearings in the pulley or a bad steering pump like M11 said.

L2R... :rl:
haha she is short like that lady, old people are the best to buy from. she is the 2nd owner and has had the car for 13 years of it's life. a few scratches on the front and rear bumper covers and around 125k miles it runs great except for this noise. so i think i will ask her to lower the price a little bit and then i will buy a new p.s. pump for it if it really needs it. first i'm going to take the old one apart and see if it's just a simple fix.

Change the Belt and fluid first.
