Sr20 cam sprocket removal.

Been following that manual on sr20's up to this point. It says to use a socket on the sprocket and an open end wrench on the hexagon shaped thing on the cam. I dont see where this thing is. How do I remove the sprockets ?

its DIRECTLY in front of the #1 cylinder cam lobe

you can do that or throw a breaker bar on the crank and hold it that way also.

Thanks, I thought that it was supposed to stick out like the lobe does. I cant fit my open end wrench in there because its too thick. About the whole breaker bar on the crank can I do that without the belt being tensioned?

Well that didnt work. The chain ended up jumping like 5 links.

Ew.......doesn't that put an awful lot of stress on the timing chain?

I wouldn't do that, but then again I am paranoid.

put a screwdriver through one of the holes of the sprocket to keep it from moving when you loosen the bolt.

all u have to do is hold the hex realy realy good and dont let it move if ur using the breaker bar technique. so u gota put some real huevos into it,if u let it slip, it could mess things up. i have done this a couple times with out problems. but i usualy use an impact to pull it off wich is the easiest.

a normal wrench wont fit it, You'll have to grind the wrench to fit unless you can find a Thin wrench to fit it

I took the sprockets off with the cams OUT of the car.


Wrap whole cam in towels, put it on workbench.

Adjustable box end wrench over hex portion (had one that BARELY squeezed in there)....make sure it is ON and fits snugly.

Breaker bar on the bolt.

You can do it with 1 person....rotate the cam so that the wrench wedges down against the workbench.

Helps to have a second person to hold the cam down and hold the wrench tho.

All of that torque is being put through the timing chain....and it is an impact tq, not a smooth tq.

I just don't like the idea of doing that, doesn't sit right with me.

Yea I totally agree that you are being a bitch about it.

COME ON, you arn't going to be sitting there for an hour with the impact hammering away at it. It should take more than a second or two to break it loose with the impact.

I can't believe there is a thread about how to break a bolt loose.

Throw a screwdriver in the sprocket hole to keep it from moving and break it loose.

OR

if you have an impact, put it in 5th gear and break it loose.

I really hope you have the bolt out by now....if not, thats sad.

i have always used a impact... even with no trans/ nothing holding crank pulley.. a quick zip breaks 'em free...

Exactly what I did. I held the breaker bar on the crank tight but the impact wrench didnt move it.

What kind of impact gun are you using? Turn up the air pressure or get a impact that can handle more torque.

There should be no reason why an impact can't get that off.

I meant the impact gun didnt make the crank move. The sprocket was taken off in a millisecond haha

WTF! take off the rocker arm stoppers and you should be able to place the hexagon wrench on the camshaft nicely (I think its either 25mm or 26mm I forget), and use a break-bar on the front of the sprocket (26mm or 27mm I believe, don't quote me on it). Never use the chain for tension, geez!

Normal wrenches are too fat

You need to either get find a thin made one or grind one to fit

I had an adjustable wrench that I used and it BARELY fit on there.....

Then, I used on my HKS cams to put the sprockets back on, and it fit on those no problem.
