View Full Version : My GF finally bought a car...
Well that's it! We found it.
My girlfriend used to have a '91 Fastback, but the frame and floor were rusted to hell... After months, she finally sold it and went on a quest for another 240sx. We searched and searched and found nothing in decent shape. Every single one of them were rusted... She started expanding her horizons... RX-7 Turbo II (FC3S), MR2 Turbo (too expensive)... We finally found a nice car today.
A MK3 Supra (1989) with targa roof, turbo and metal head gasket upgrade. The car has no rust, it's practically perfect. It pulls very hard. I'm very impressed. Best thing of it all, it's manual and has all the options except the leather interior. We can't wait to pick it up! I love it!

I would've gone with the FC, but if she likes the MkIII, that's cool. Pics?
Problems with FC's are the reliability issue. I'm more confident with a 7M-GTE with metal head gasket than a rotary engine.

Heh someone did there research :) the head gasket is the most common problem with the 7mgte.
I had a 2nd gen for some time and I loved it. I had to move out of country and opted to get sell it rather than have it garaged. My single greatest complaint was the exhorbant cost of repair parts for the supra and I'm not even talking TRD parts either.

Well, if there wasn't a metal gasket on the car, I wouldn't had bought in the first place. (I'm financing it for my GF). I think that this car can be very reliable. The previous owner got a new engine for it (the other was blown), installed a HKS metal gasket, changed the timing belt. Basically, the things that can fail are acessories and drivetrain... I'm pretty confident it can be reliable. :)

if the headgasket goes. swap in a 1jz-gte or if you got the big $$$ swap a 2jz-gte
1jz is around same as a RB25DET
extremely popular in japan :)
there are a few 1jz powered supras here in so cali. also a few 2jz :) hehe..mm so nice.

yeah that HG is a PITA I blew two when I had my MKIII and it was a NA auto. its still dead I need to do something with the shell. pop is tired of storing it lol. it may end up with an SC300 engine if jjason ever makes up his mind. or I'll find some more money and get a 2jz and 5speed swap for it :) I miss that Targa top.
Thanks for the comments guys! ;) I was scared that you guys would diss the car since it's heavy and not a 240sx and all... but I love it. I'm jealous of my GF... but hey, I got a nice powerful 240sx.

Hmmm.....I think a lot of people would be dissing you if you had started posting pics of your GF's new Civic, but that's not what she bought. ;) Nothing at all wrong with old-skool Supra!
Maybe someday you can get her to move up to the MkIV....

I will. She's scared she's going to regret it. Somehow, I doubt it. :)

That car ran a 15.09 stock with 205 winter tires at rear and a conservative launch (no dumping of clutch slipping, just go and floor after the car is moving).

looks great
but get some new wheels one day :p
so what does she plan to do with it? mod it at all or just daily driver a to b car? how about some auto-x? :)
Since I started Auto-X this year and had so much fun in it, I'll try to get her to auto-x with me. :) I think she will. She's an enthusiast, not that kind of girl that doesn't want to dirty her hands. She does most of the work on her car by herself and she reads a lot which makes her very knowledgeable. She'll be a Supra reference in about a month or so. :)
I doubt she'll mod it over 300whp. That means, intake, hard pipes, downpire, exhaust, maybe afm and fuel pump, some gauges (boost, egt, oil pressure), turbo timer and MBC. She likes a nice street car that HANDLES well. So most probably some good shock/spring combo. Need to read up on it.
She told me that once she get used to the car, she'll auto-x with me. Mods will come next year. For the moment, I'll get her a nice BOV and cat-back (because the exhaust is broken from the catalytic converter...).

You like that car? Damn, I wish my GF felt the same way as you. When I ask her what car she'd like me to buy her, hypothetically, she says a new C5 'vert or an Audi TT. And it HAS to be new, can't even be a year old!
If she was into cars like the MkIII Supra, I probably would've bought her one by now... :)

i have noticed myself staring at those mkiii supras and beginning to like how those old school mkiii supras look. they have that classic old school sports carlook that says 'dont mess with me, i'm probably fast' i dont know, maybe thats just me, but i respect those cars because the 7mgte engine is a 6cylinder turbo engine capable of making a lot of horse power. however, i dont think its that great for auto cross because of its weight. those cars are heavy.
