i have a few problems with my 91 240sx coupe.

1) not always but occasionally when i reverse and i put the brake on slightly, i get this kinda grinding noise. its not like grinding from not having pads back there but it is something else.

2) i keep having problems with my taillights. at first the whole taillight would go out whenever i had the lights off and put the brake on. then i traced it and it was the grounds on the lights. but is is doing it again. could it be something else.?

3) i am leaking alot of oil. i did an oil change about a month ago and i was so low that it wouldnt even register on the dipstick. when i got my oil changed they said that my oil sending unit was leaking(right by the oil filter) and that it needed to be replaced. do you know how much it would be to replace that?

thanks, joel

Have you even checked your rear pads, it sounds like wear indicators to me. Maybe your rear calipers aren't seating with your brake pads correctly. perhaps you have bad rotors in the rear, and perhaps you have aggressive pads in the rear so that they'll grind when cold.

it's also possible that it could be wheel bearings. jack up the rear end and spin the rear tire and see if there's any sound.

if it's not coming from your brakes, it'll be pretty obvious where else it could be coming from.

oh yeah, you don't have to replace the oil sending unit, it's common for it to leak. take out the sensor, clean it out and make sure the threads are clean, then put on some teflon tape on it and put it back on.

if you really need a new unit, get it from a wrecked 240 or go to nissan and grab one from them. but becareful, oem parts are $$$$$.

thanks.

i problem only happens in reverse but i jacked the car up but i couldnt reproduce it. i dont think that it would be the pad if it only did it in reverse and only when cold.

I've been getting the same thing on my s14 lately. It's not so much a grinding noise but at low speed reverse when I initially depress the brakes the whole rear end moans and kinda shudders for a second. It's loud, but just seems like it's the pads.

i had the same problem before.. i ended up changing all my pads and rotors and haven't heard it since so i'm sure your problems lies somewhere there

Well my pads have a lot of life left in them but I glazed them one time and then just sanded them all down. After that it was all gravy till maybe two months after. I really want to get my new slotted rotors and aftermarket pads when I change them. Hopefully it not detrimental, I don't think it is cause its only when under 5mph in reverse, I can just wait it out till the brakes do have to be change. I haven't noticed anything bad while going forward so I don't think I should be really worried. Should I?
