Okay, I did a search, looked in the FAQ and got nothing so here it goes. Lately when I shift gears, it seems to take more effort than usual so I'm thinking synchros or some oil in the gearbox. Since adding oil is alot easier I'll try it first. How would I go about putting oil into my gearbox to try and smooth out the shifting (if thats what I should be doing) and what kind of oil should i use? Thanx

gear oil 80w-90w

fair enough. Now how do I go about actually getting the oil in the gearbox? is there a certain way? do I drain oil anywhere or just put it in? also, how much do I put in? I know I know, a lotta questions but I dont want to **** it up

do NOT use 80w90 inside your gearbox. (most oils at this viscosity are probably GL5 rated, not GL4 rated)

if you want protection from bad shifting in your tranny get Redline's HEAVY SHOCKPROOF Oil, it's GL4 rated and works in your transmission a-ok.

Also, do your engine a favor and rev match.

---------there'll be a plug with a squareshaped block in the side of your tranny on the driverside, that's where you put the tranny oil in. make sure you can take it off first. a lot of people have found that theirs are stuck on after so many years.

another method of putting fluid in is from the interior, you open up your gear shifter until the tranny is exposed and pour from there, but you need a small wrench to be able to take six bolts off.

underneath the tranny would be a drain plug, it's pretty obvious which one it is.

Hey, thanx for the info! And yeah, I have started to rev match a bit. Its actually kinda fun.

Now as for the tranny fluid....How much exactly am I supposed to put in? And is there only one kind of the Redline heavy shockproof?

ONE MORE THING!

Check your clutch pedal. If the adjusters are not within spec, the clutch will not disengage enough between shifts and you'll get poor shifting. My FSM isn't nearby, but the specs are something like this:

1-2mm "free play" at top of travel
~7.5" from floorboard to face of pedal (perpendicular measurement from floor)

If these aren't in spec, use the adjusters to fix it. Oh, and buy an FSM if you haven't already :)

because your tranny is made for 75w90 in temperatures below 104 Degrees F. Thicker oil could lead to problems, plus most 80w90 gear oil is for differentials. GL4 oils have a different resistance when subjected to heavy gearing pressure compared to GL5. This can determine whether your transmission shifts easier or harder as well as determine the life as well.
