I have a real challenge for you...I have a 91 nissan 240 sx that won't start. Pulled it out to wash it a couple months ago and when I went to start it the next morning it would not start..just turn over. Did not wash the engine!

What I do know is that it is flooding the cylinders and here is what i have done so far.

1) checked timing chain...99% sure it is OK

2) replaced fuel pressure regulator

3) then (yeah, should have done this first and saved 80 bucks) checked the fuel pressure..about 40-45

4) replaced coolant sensor

5) replaced TPS...although now I can't calibrate it until I get the darn thing running

6) took O2 sensor out and tried to start...thought maybe the converter might be plugged....no difference, I was told to try this

7) as I understand the MAF should not make this happen so have not replaced...although I think I checked OHMs or something...and it was OK

8) stuck a little 194 bulb in each injector harness and cranked engine....not sure what the pulse is supposed to look like but it lights up longer than it is off??

9) checked codes in computer....5-5 which is normal....no lights ever cam on the dash either

10) replaced coil, had spark but looked like coil was shorting out on bracket?<img src="#/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/confused.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt='???'>? no change

11) checked the grounds that I could find....is there a ground for the computer?

If I pull the plugs and clean them and unplug injectors and crank engine to purge fuel from top of pistons and put back together and reach in and turn over it will run at maybe 300 RPM...but usually still won't run at all...sometime just die right away and if it runs long enough to hit the throttle it dies instantly.

I don't have any diagnostics equipment and really don't want to take it to a shop...so I keep plugging away and become more aggitated each time I try something and it fails to solve the problem.

I am starting to suspect the computer...about all that is left I think! Only things that were off a bit before this happened are... a slight stumble when accelerating (figured the TPS would solve this??) and the radio would occassionally go bonkers and go from AM to FM and get stuck on a station. Not sure if any of this could point to a computer starting to go out.

Suppose there is a slight chance water got in the computer....windshield may have a slight leek as I recall.... took cover off and no signs of damage

So ANY help or direction...thought about getting a junkyard computer....but hate to without more knowledge.

Also how about the crank angle sensor...or a distributor foul up?<img src="#/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/confused.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt='???'>?<img src="#/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/confused.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt='???'>?

THANKS for ANY HELP

How long was it sitting before you started it? Put some new fuel in it. My guess it would have to do with the Fuel System or the Fuel itself. Disconnect the fuel system by unpluging the fuel system fuse (s13 is in the engine bar, s14 is in the kick panel) and crank the car over for like 5-10 seconds. Then replug everything and crank it over again for 5-10 seconds.

THanks for the response, I had been driving it for quite a while befoere I started doing body work, so the fuel should be OK. When I crank it it's just dumping tons of fuel in the cylinders and washing down the plugs, all of them! Something appears to be giving the wrong signal to the fuel injectors. I THINK the only thing I have not replaced is the computer, injectors are not leaking to my knowledge, so I have not messed with them only to check and make sure they were pulsing. This thing has really got me baffled!!!

By the way, nice 240!!!

dead 240!

Hrmmmm..... might be the ECU then. Dont know how or why It would be, but you never know. I'm stumped.

thats about the only thing left....unless someone else can give me any more clues.....I am told it would be rare to be the ECU....but running out of options...anyone know if you can check the ECU?<img src="#/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/confused.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt='???'>?<img src="#/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/confused.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt='???'>
might call around Monday and see if I can locate one. thanks

You said you ran the ECU Diagnostics and got a code 55? Code 55 mean everything is ok. I couldn't imagine it would be the ECU anyways. It probably wouldn't even start if it was malfunctioning.

Wish I knew which way to run now, I am sure the ECU is a pricey little unit and I don't want to go that route without knowing for sure.....I was told the timing chain could jump 5 or 6 teeth and it would still run, more than that and it would probably bend valves, did a compression check and no bent valves. Whatever it was it happened between starting it and pulling it in the garage and turning it off....next morning it would not start!!!! What a pain!!!

To bad I have a JWT ECU now, I would have sent you my spare 91 ECU. I guess I could send it to you but I would have to make sure I would get it back.

let me see what a used one cost...might consider working something out to try your spare...certainly no problem sending yours back! I appreciate the offer...would be the best way to find out if its the ECM and I hate to buy one to find that out!
Will let you know....
thanks again

Nothing too genius, but... did you check to make sure the plugs are getting spark? If the distributor is bad... My curiosity turned to this when you said the plugs were bathing in gas... if there's a spark... you get the point.
